In memory of John Allen Jones Jr, a US ball turret gunner whose plane was shot down over Germany, spent months in a German-run POW camp, and when he came back, despite the abuse and weighing just over a hundred pounds….only told funny stories of the POW camp, like how they taught the German guards who wanted to learn English ridiculous phrases. Or how when he first got out of his parachute after bailing out of the damaged plane, a very elderly German woman came screaming out of a nearby farmhouse, and kept feebly hitting with a broom as he stood there and smoked a cigarette and waited for the other Germans approaching to take him prisoner. He also was so hungover on a practice jump during basic training in the US, he jumped at the wrong spot (while the instructor was doing a walk-thru of the jump commands before they were at the jump site). They had to send a Jeep into the Arizona desert to find him. He met a pretty young nurse named Katie while in hospital recovering, and were married for about 50 years.

I saw everyone sharing stories, so here's mine. My great grandfather was 14 in 1945. He was from Munich, but his parents moved to Berlin as the Allies closed in from Italy. He joined a Local Hitler Youth group and began doing Nightly activities such as Patrols, clean up, and sometimes helping man a Flak Gun. He said the Thing he remembers most about the Battle of Berlin was one time when he was Handed a panzerfaust( those who don't know, a Panzerfaust is a Handheld Anti-tank weapon.) and told to fire at an approaching Russian tank. He tried to hit the hands tracks to incapacitate it. But ended up missing terribly, hitting a nearby building. His Superior Officer yelled at him, so he ran away to go hide in a Cellar. He stayed there for a while until he could hear the bombing stopped. He then emerged to see the Russians had won and was quickly identified by his Hitler Youth Uniform and was taken to a Roundup of prisoners. his Mother had survived when they then moved to England where my grandfather lives to this day. Edit: His father was killed by the Norwegians early on in the war.

What will happen? World War 4 will be fought with stone hand-axes. Einstein said something about that nature. His conversation with Roosevelt: "With the technology which will be available to us. One day a ship will enter New York harbor and with one explosion from a device on that ship the entire city will vanish from the face of the earth." Just this combination and a 9/11 style attack will fulfill this prophesy.

My other grandfather, who was an orphan, wanted to fight also, but my grandmother did not let him go, telling him that she does not want my father to be orphan as was my grandfather. They both passed away during these last 2 years. The grandparents of all of us did amazing deeds. We did nothing compared to that.

A true soldier doesn't fight for what he hates in front of him. He fights for what he loves behind him.
I dont got much of a story but out of four of my grandparents only one of them ever saw a war with his/her eyes. My grandfather was 7 when the germans invaded Albania. He didnt see any combat considering that not much happened in albania during ww2. Although he does remember quite a few stories. One time he and his family were returning to their house when they saw it on fire and heard a lot of gunfire. Luckily none of them were hurt. Meanwhile my grandmother's brother was 14 at the start of ww2. Even though he was so young he still did fight. He was a partisan fighting for Albania and I respect him to this day. He is still alive at 93. I'm happy none of my grandparents ever fought in ww2. Yet I dont forget how horrifying it was.

My Maternal great great grandfather fought in the British Indian Army in WW2 and he died in an unknown location in 1942. Maternal Great grandfather (different branch of family tree) was in the Indian Army during the India-Pakistan wars of 1965 and 1971. He single handedly constructed an air raid shelter for his locality all by himself during the 1971 war. My paternal grandfather meanwhile, was an NCO in the Indian Air Force, who fought in the wars of 1965 and 1971 after surviving partition and coming to India as a refugee a few years after the partition due to discrimination. I am currently finding more information about warriors of my family tree as many were recruited from the villages during both the world wars, where my ancestors come from. And also, many of my ancestors were Sikh, and would have hence fought in the Anglo-Sikh wars and other wars of the Sikh Empire.

My Great Uncle was a captain in the second world war and was a beach master on Omaha. He went in before the first wave in the attack. He directed the landing on that beach and helped soldiers out of the boats. He was one of the first American soldiers to land in France that day. He also helped land General Patton in the invasion of Sicily and Salerno. He also served in North Africa. On Omaha, he was standing under heavy German fire. Somehow he made it out alive that day. He later served in the Korean War. He served in the Army in WW2, the Coast Guard in Korea, and then served in the Marine Corps, and Navy. He went to VMI and graduated at age 22 and was 35 in 44. After the war, he became a sheriff. Rest in Peace Captain F Perry Williams.

He was standing on a deck so when the bomb hit it crashed through and hit the mud below and it didn't detonate. he then served in the army and became a combat medic and fought in papua new Guinea. Although he almost became AWOL and was no longer a combat medic because he shot the enemy. The geneve convention prohibits combat medic from firing a gun. He said that if the enemy is shooting at him, he should back. He would also catch meleria during the campaign. Now unfortunately i do not know much of what happened next this due to him not talking about the thing he did which is understandable.

Well there is a reason that they're called "The Greatest Generation" that ever lived. It doesn't just refer to Americans. But all who fought in the World Wars. Even the Nazi's. Its why they were so difficult to defeat. Many things can be learned from those wars, and one of those things is the power of belief. Both Germany and Japan Believed in their causes. At the time though... I think the United States also had the belief of morality. We believed in doing what was right. Not for political ideology, or power grab, or territory. But belief in doing what is right for people, and the voiceless, the repressed. I think the Allies won because of love. The Nazis lost because of their hate. As for Japan, I think they lost, not because of hate, but of fear. The Emperor had little choice but to surrender. Either fight to the last man woman and child, and lose a culture and nation that has much to be proud of. Or surrender with the knowledge that there is a chance of continuing to thrive, but sadly knowing a great change in culture would happen. But that's just my romantic and VERY simplified version of the ends of those wars and the humanity of it. Just opinion, and not based on any fact or reason. What do you think?
