We put this fun video together as a request from several of our design loving community members! Combining multiples styles is something that we all deal with when we’re trying to decorate our homes because very few times does everyone in the house have the same design aesthetic! Let me know what you think about this video and also let me know what different design styles your houserepresents!❤❤

I thought of an example of how I unified colors. I wanted to make little vignettes with my treasures so I started out with color themes and gathered items of the same color together. However, I had trouble arranging them. The items were patterned and had multiple shades of colors and the grouping looked cluttered. So I had the idea to use a solid color to unify a grouping. I ended up collecting vases of various colors and sizes, which worked. A green vase, for example, could pull together a group of items that were predominantly green or had some green in them. A little stem of pink or yellow picked up other colors in the group of items. I have never heard a decorator point out this technique. I saw a decorator in a video use this color technique in one of her shows. She displayed a grouping of items she bought on shopping trips and wanted to sell, and she unified the grouping, which included furniture, using a solid white pitcher. The result was really nice! The next challenge was to unify two contrasting solid colors. I had two very tall and nice items which I could only put on the mantel because they wouldn't fit anywhere else at the time. But they didn't go together very well. One was a cobalt blue decanter. The other was red deep Chinese vase with flowers on it which was at one time part of a mantel set. However, I found some Asian items which had four colors in them, including red and blue. This unified the objects as far as color goes. Chinese designs can have a multitude of colors and shapes. I found this out one time when I tried to embroider a Chinese fish. I didn't normally embroider animals and had no idea what colors to use. Who embroiders a fish anyway? I only sewed flowers. People bought my white-on-white embroidered tea towels for wedding gifts! The 1858 designs came from a book compiled by neighborhood ladies in the garden club, which was sold in the same gift shop. The only fish I consented to embroider was one in a Dover Chinese design book The Asians know how to make fish look cute. I appealed to the lady who ran the consignment shop and who had suggested sewing a fish in the first place. She had to pick out the colors for me. It turned out pretty, though, and someone bought it. Needless to say, from then on I paid close attention to how complicated it would be to pick out colors for a Chinese design. Thanks for this video. It was an inspiration! .

I thought of an example of how I combined two styles in one small space. Does that count? LOL If you have a lot of knick-knacks - then they can be sorted by season, right? So there are two questions: -- How can one item be enhanced for each season, and -- How can one seasonal item be used for a different season? For example, suppose you have a rustic bench. Rustic would suggest Fall. You can see apples, pumpkins and dried corn in baskets on a rustic bench. However, for Spring it could be transformed with little chicks, bunnies and eggs in a basket. Save the porcelain items for the china cabinet. On the other hand, what if you had a Mexican vignette on the sideboard in August and needed another little item to enhance the display? Picture this: There is a turquoise-colored scarf for the runner, a Mexican hat with red and yellow hibiscus sitting on it, a picture of a bird with real feathers in a carved frame which came from Mexico many years ago, a Mexican jug with bright orange flowers which looks like it was in Arby's at one time and contains red and yellow hibiscus, a round wooden plaque from Ecuador which has bright orange and red in a landscape with an adobe hut and a lady, a siesta-man bookend, a wind chime from Moab Utah with a road-runner on it, a turquoise necklace, a little red and yellow parakeet, and a turquoise oil lamp with an iridescent globe. The lamp could create an impression of a Spanish influence, and it goes with the runner and necklace. Now the big question is, would it be OK to add in a little brown pottery jug that says Smokey Mountain Pottery Tennessee to embellish the display with something small in one corner? This jug belongs in the July decor box for the Americana theme, which includes Early American, primitive, pewter, etc. The jug has a spout but no handle, and is brown on the top half and tan on the bottom half. The colors blend in with the earthy Mexican tones. I think it is OK! It demonstrates One Space and Two Styles which blend together. I think if people could practice decorating in small spaces first, then they would be better at visualizing how to decorate a whole room. Also it would give a person practice at noticing details in a whole room. As always, I enjoy your videos!

you have good content. But I have to say that it is quite common to have different styles in a home and not havr to relegate yourself to just simply one style. Better yet, I believe the best homes are those that are in able to be defined by a particular style and simply labeled as unique and personal. I believe that those who follow one style lack creativity and intuition and just follow trends. Just my two cents.

What do you do when the home’s architecture calls for a style that doesn’t really fit your design personality?

What’s the style of your house and what’s your ideal aesthetic? Surprisingly, the more contrasting the styles, the more interesting the outcomes.

Very interesting ! It is hard to combine a survey with a how-to. It would help to point out particular style details in the survey you are showing. I don't know what I am looking for. I am seeing architectural features, lighting, flooring, paint jobs, furniture, window treatments and decorations - and 2 slides at the same time! And it would help to physically put together items to demonstrate the process of combining two styles and show a few examples. Maybe 2 separate videos. For example, if you want to combine the wife's rose-colored Victorian style with the husband's industrial style, show an example of the process in real time, not just the result. Do you change out the lighting, paint the walls, change the carpet or what? Do you put a typewriter on the marble-top wash stand and a spittoon on the needlepoint rug? How does that work? Or how about a sideboard with a license plate on one side and pink rococo French figurines on the other side? You could demonstrate with just one centerpiece on a dining room table for guests. Just get a lot of greenery, various colored flowers, and some candles. If a couple can't coordinate on that one event, I wouldn't attempt to renovate the bathroom with Italian marble. Find 5, 7 or 9 of the most outrageously disconnected objects such as a Barbie doll and a dough bowl and demonstrate how to combine 2 different styles for a centerpiece or bookshelf ! I have a four-square 1920's house in the old part of the city, with 1920's dining room furniture and 1940's living room, furniture from both sides of the family. I have boxes of seasonal decor for each month to put in the dining and living area. I don't change out the curtains or pillows. For example, April is Easter, Dutch and farm animals, May is Mother's Day, English, butterflies and tea sets, June is nautical and fishing, July is Americana, August is Mexican, September is Mediterranean, October is Eastern Europe, November is Thanksgiving, wild game and Native American, and Oh, you know about Christmas. January is Oriental and February is Valentine's and French. So I have a different style for each month. The little granddaughters know how to decorate with the small items in the box, and the linens and flowers I set out for them - One of the little girls went to her Aunt's house and started decorating the house. To accommodate two people's styles, each could take a room or corner of the room, or they could take turns for a certain period of time. The more you rotate decor, the more practice you get. Take pictures and put them on Facebook. Take care, Love
