Two cameras, two episodes of Northern Lights taking photos all trough the night. The second Aurora episode is one of the most beautiful and magical Northern Lights I have ever captured.
For the "hurry hurry panic" people:
02:10 Milkyway
03:14 The main fantastically magical Northern Lights episode start
03:37 Growing part
04:04 Pulsing part
04:33 Blue hour starts
Even though I think it would be better for you to calm down and watch the whole thing, but...
To capture the whole evolution of the Northern Lights with the pulsing and flairing part of it was wonderful. And most of all I did get the movement quite right I think: - A lot of tweaking during the shoot. Also the composition on the main camera was about as good one can get it for the latter Northern Lights. So I have in principle the whole Northern Light in scene in camera from the beginning to the end even including the mesmerizing movement of the widening and diminishing part. I think there was still some movement there, but when dawn comes you can't differentiate the Northern Lights anymore. You just can't predict northern lights when, where etc. In my opinion that is also the beauty and excitement with them. You never know what you get. But this time I was lucky enough and the camera angles and scenes where quite optimal. This place is of course familiar to me so I know quite well where the northern lights are or will be depending on the power of them. But you never know and to get it this right was fantastic. I was up almost 24h straight in the end and 8+ hours of balancing on the slippery stones and saggy vegetation. You did feel like you've done your part in it all! Not even speaking of the post processing part here... I had two cameras running Panasonic Lumix s5 (mk1 og) with the kit 20-60mm and Lumix g80 (81/85). Yes, a micro four thirds camera for night photo! But I had a booster and a Samyang 24mm 1.4 (t1.5) on it, so about a 36mm 1.05? Ok there is still a big difference between full frame and m43 and you can see it clearly in the video and most of all the samyang is quite prone to misting up, so I did not get the timelapse I wanted from it, but for stills it's good enough. And an extreme nuisance was that the foot of the booster had loosened up so the framing moved everytime I wiped the lens from the mist. You can see this clearly. After using the booster for years without problems, now it then acts at a critical moment. I should have checked it before and tightened it up or perhaps it was the cold and misty weather that loosened it in the end? Taking individual stills is quite something else than trying to get an all night nightscape! If you are interested in the differences of fullframe and m43 Aurora photos in detail check out my videos where I develop raw images from both cameras from this specific material with also some technical and timelapse discussion included:

Cameras are only tools!
A tip for night photographers: Get a bag that is fully weather resistant in itself not just a/the cover. My camera bag was really wet and I needed to move it to a warmer and drier place so my stuff would not have gone bad, I really hope they won't? And get lenses with moisture resistant coatings! You won't regret them! Ok the mist was quite extreme, but...
As for the sound part I really wanted to do something a bit more elaborate for this one. Not just a quick soundtrack, but a musical piece in it's own right, something with effect and also with value as a piece. Not just background music. Ok mostly I try to do something special musically or sound design wise for every single video, but this time I wanted to put some more time and effort in this because the video material is extraordinary. Of course I wanted to make something that was as magical and as mystical as the Northern Lights themselves. In the end the music or soundcape did become quite complex and nuanced. Many instruments/themes and even a bespoke synth sound with Yoshimi for this and of course some mixing and effect gimmicks in Ardour. Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment the visuals or sound or why not both: Different people hear and see different things!
