On an August afternoon in 2020 I received word that Amtrak was running a special train of retired Talgo equipment from the Pacific Northwest to their maintenance shop in Beech Grove, IN. (I’ll have a link to that video below in the comments.) I was all set up to video this southbound (timetable east) train that I was warned about from the Oakwood Defect Detector. When to my surprise a northbound (timetable west) train approached from behind and on the wrong main track. With little to no time to launch the drone let alone reposition my GoPro I decided to film this first train going away not knowing when the second one would appear and if it maybe blocked from view. With the special Amtrak train already departing Milwaukee it was a busy time on the Canadian Pacific C&M Subdivision.
The first train features two rebuilt locomotives CP 8146, a GE AC4400CWM rebuild from an AC4400CW in 2018 and CP 6034, a GMD SD40-3, rebuilt in 2017 from a SD40-2. Both were the second version of the “Beaver” scheme.
The second train is led by another GE AC4400CWM rebuild, CP 8047 and has CP 8899, a GE ES44AC, following it elephant style. Much to my surprise this train also had the D-Day commemorative unit, CP 6644 as the DPU. The SD70ACU was rebuilt from a SD90MAC.
