The Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax) has a wingspan of 2.3m and a long, wedge-shaped tail. The Wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia’s largest raptor and one of the largest eagles in the world.
The adult Wedge-tailed Eagle has mostly dark blackish-brown feathers. It has a brown eye, a pale bill, off white feet, and feathered legs to the base of the toes.
Juvenile Wedge-tailed Eagles are overall brown with more reddish-brown feathering on heads and wings. They become progressively blacker for at least the first ten years of their lives. The only difference in plumage between the sexes is that the female is generally slightly paler than her mate. Females (4.2 kg - 5.3 kg) are also larger and heavier than males (3.2 kg up to 4.0 kg).
The Wedge-tailed Eagle perches for most of the day on tree branches or rocks, looking out at its surroundings for prey. Occasionally the Wedge-tailed Eagle flies low over its territory as seen in this video, and regularly flies to heights of 2km.
