CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is often used as a term for when a farm sells shares at the beginning of the season and then gives out boxes of produce each week to it's customers.

@@janew5351 I'm struggling with price though. It's $27 a week for quite a small box of organic produce. I don't doubt their figures for getting a living wage as they have a very small holding and no economies of scale But it is $4 an item. I can buy organic vegetables in the UK for $12-15 a week for a similar amount. It looks good quality, but I would say it suits better off families with plenty of disposable income maybe with personal links with the farm. The people reading this must be quite well off, as nowhere is the price of $27 a week discussed or even mentioned!

i think we are seeing a shift in how we can do business as small farmers...we don't have to just follow one model like curtis stone...but we can create a balance of creating overall value through the variety of produce but still utilize the fast growing crops to create that initial cash flow....people value in general what you can provide...but when you consider things like giving your CSA clients add ons like eggs and such we can create more impact.....i'm pumped for 2020 growing season...my first year doing a csa membership...we have to be creative....we have to rewire peoples thinking of their access to fresh food...

Absolutely awesome 👏. We just started growing produce 3 years ago. We’re below you in South Carolina. Things have went ok, but honestly this year was terrible w all the rain. We lost 90% of our tomatoes from torrential rains. We had 4 ac of tomatoes and was the best crop we’ve ever grown. We were ab a week away from picking canning and sandwich tomatoes and we got a 14” rain in 6 hours and it pretty much destroyed them all. They were tied up with the Fla weave system, but plants were so loaded that it just beat em to the ground and tore all the branches off. Saddest thing I’ve ever experience in my 30 year farming career. We also farm 800 of grain too, but seriously thinking ab moving away from that part of farming.

@krankankor

@@gabrielbaumanbaker2784 It takes big bucks to buy the property to just begin to farm the place plus seeds, plus workers, temp buildings, processing facilities--I could go on. So who put up the cash to get the farm operation started and what was the total financial investment to get the farm started and maintained for at least a year?
@Indigololz
4 жыл бұрын
$2.5M might be how much you pay for a brand new operation on 750 acres of prime corn land in Nebraska, but this small operation probably cost less than $20K to get going. They made lots of smart moves too: leasing land, growing their CSA, buying land with friends. It's still a tiny operation too - they're only farming on 3/4th an acre out of their 6 acres. I'd estimate they paid about $50K for their share of the land.
@mydear6788
4 жыл бұрын
@@krankankor take a look at their location farm land for sale and you see 20 acres of land it's about $200 000 approximately. Devide it by 4 or 5, that's far away from 2.5 million.☺ The set up...if you are handy and smart you do the work...probably 50K would do it and slowly every year you make improvements.
