Thanks for the review, Cuckoo! I was in the market for a mixer just a few months ago. I needed something portable, something small, and something that would allow BT audio and also some basic EQ and effects. This mixer was very high on my list of potential mixers. However, (and I know you addressed this up front) it is very expensive. I finally went with the Behringer Flow 8, which has many of the same capabilities, and although not as small as the TX-6, it has a small form factor but not too small. It has memory recall, and presets. It just works. And it is $200 compared to 1K. You can't put it in your pocket, but you also can't really put the TX-6 in your pocket when it's all connected to your gear. They have externalized a lot of connectivity in the TX-6. Everything is expected to be 1/8" inputs, and that isn't exactly practical for a lot of outboard gear, requiring an adapter and possibly splitter cabling, or adapter cables. This is a really sexy unit, no question. It speaks the language of design and form, and it's a beautiful piece to look at. Would I like someone to gift me this? Sure! As for how practical that is in real world terms, I guess it depends on the application. I found it to be just too much to ask price-wise, but others will want to pay that price for it's beauty and design. To each their own, I guess.

They are units that are considered cheap at this price that do half of what this do, this unit is cheap, find me a 12 channel USB C interface with FX cues, aux and midi capabilities at this price. I have been using TX-6 for a week now, and I have nothing but positive things to say. Some settings could be adjustable, such as the compressor A/R and delay tails, but on the other hand, the same thing applies to most other mixers. But I sure wish TE would give us an update for adjusting these settings. Some observations and first impressions. 1. The battery and portability are a gift from heaven. I can conveniently sample various things onto a USB stick, just plug in an audio cable and hit record. 2. 6 stereo inputs or 12 mono inputs, or a combination of these, into the MPC One, or a DAW running on a laptop or on iPhone. I've been longing for this multitrack functionality for a long time. Now I can connect, mix and record my hardware setup. Of course there are products like Tascam's Model 12, but I'm kind of thankful that there were no units available in Europe and I stumbled into this one instead. 3. I've had a good fun with it and new ideas coming (for me). For example: A bass connected to TX-6, which listens the beat and then sends the midi clock to other devices. Just play the bass varying the pace and other instruments follow the natural speed of my playing. Also the effect tails are synced perfectly, including those for my bass.

Not sure that there’s nothing like it: I think 1010music Bluebox covers quite a few of its functions & attributes plus seemingly providing significant extras. I’d like to see an in depth comparative review of both : showing features differences/overlap & some degree to which there might be substantive technical superiority of either in significant shared areas & of course & the areas where they differ.
@vvlvmusic
Жыл бұрын
@@johndfella1 So I agree that the Bluebox will be great for a lot of people at half the price. But there are things that speak for the TX-6 that the 1010 doesn't have. Of course it's all about personal preference and budget. TX-6 has physical controls for all channels, faders and 3 poti, where as 1010 is all menu diving. I want to look at a mixer and see what it does. 1010 has Midi in and out which is great. TX-6 has Midi over bluetooth. TX-6 has really good beat detection which I love for stuff that has no Midi (GameBoy jams for example). TX-6 has more effects (bluebox: reverb, delay, compressor / tx-6: compressor, reverb, delay, chorus, bit crusher, distortion, tape stop,...). And bluebox is 3 times the weight, 2 times the size and needs an external power source, whereas tx-6 has a more than decent battery life. Bluebox of course has a way bigger, colourful display. If you need/want that, the TX-6 can't compete with its GameBoy aesthetic OLED even though I think they make excellent use of it (and a TE guy hinted to me that the USB might at one point also work to send visual information). I think there's something for everyone but I love to have this micro device with internal battery and it makes me use it all the time with how convenient it feels to me. Loopop has an excellent review on the 1010 but I am sure you've seen that one already. I don't think one of these 2 devices is superior in every way, it comes down to what you want.

@TB-wvvvw

@@johndfella1 Bluebox is good at what it does I'm sure, but it and TX-6 aren't even the same kind of device. The primary function of the TX-6 is to be an audio interface with a lot of channels. The Bluebox is not an audio interface at all, and on the 1010 forum they say that 1010 doesn't intend to add that functionality to it. The TX-6 lets me connect up to 12 channels from external instruments into my DAW as individual tracks on the USB cable at one time; interfaces with that many input jacks tend to be pretty expensive, and also don't usually have all the interesting extra features it has or of course the tiny footprint and portability.

I've got the TX-6 and while generally it's a marvel of fitting lots of features into a teeny tiny package, it suffers a couple of massive problems that make it incredibly frustrating. One is that the multi-purpose pots are linear / analog instead of digital / infinite, so if you need one pot setting to be 0 and the next setting to be 100, you have to crank it all the way round when jumping between settings. If the pot is at zero but the setting page you're on has that effect set to 70, all it takes is the slightest breeze for the setting to suddenly jump to zero - same problem as the Pocket Operators, and it completely ruins the user experience in a professional (especially performance) environment. You can't just nudge an EQ or effect up or down a touch on the fly, you've got to crank the pot round to wherever it was for the last page of settings, which is awful to do with those tiny heads, and leads to accidental nudging of the neighbouring pots, leading to an infinite cycle of fixing sudden sound problems.

If they'd made the mixer, and screen, twice as big, nobody would've complained that it was too big. People would still complain about the price of course, but nobody would say it's too big. This is definitely for people recording on the go, and it seems so easy to lose/steal, at this size/value ratio.

Cuckoo, I just don’t get it: the main function of this is to mix a live performance. But in this case one would look for a big, comfortable interface. So it’s contradictory: the compactness and size is made for “on the run” traveler, but traveler is not a band or performer, he is rather a note taker, ideas sketcher, composer… I truly feel that my tiny Tascam (the one with pan pots on each channel) is far more superior with its infinite bouncing and guitar, line and mic entrances…

Tascam has great portable sound recorders and mixers etc. They have really great options. If you don't see any attraction or point in the TX-6 then that's great. It's not for you, so nothing to worry about. I think most TX-6 users simply love it to death. Me included. Everything is so incredibly elegant, and it sounds great. For me, I usually set up the mix, and then I don't need to be very active with the mixer. A little mute work or volume nudges here and there. But for very active mixer work it's no doubt more convenient with a bigger hands-on experience.

@@dreamsaremaps what’s the use of a micro-iper-mobile mixer, if you then have to bring dongles to make it work? Also, is there absolutely no limit on how small a controller can be? My sausage fingers don’t think so. This mixer is not like a corvette, it’s more like the little superexpensive electric BMWs that rich people buy for their kids

They need to make this as a midi controller with mini midi to full size midi adapters in the box. This would be INCREDIBLY useful with something like an Empress effects Zoia as a synth player.

@@JohnnyADi Standalone midi controller ? I don't understand, midi is for connecting to something making a sound ? Standalone would mean that it has battery and/or that it would have sound samples also which this thing does. Also I found you can use it as a midi device in bluetooth. But yeah the price is interesting if you use the features if you don't it become a fancy gadget

So do I understand this correctly: you can send stereo channels out of Ableton and route them individually to the aux bus for external fx? If so, this is very cool.

Aesthetically and functionally this device looks quite nice. Even the price, albeit high, is not a show stopper. But the size is just idiotic. Fiddly and uncomfortable and there's just no way around it. With this level of design and execution it would be nearly perfect was it 3 times the size. And probably would be less complex to manufacture, which, even if price stayed the same, would be better for TE.

TE needs to make a model 2x the size, for 1/4 in balanced inputs and outputs, with 1 channel including xlr in and phantom power/mic preamp. i have no interested in spending that much on mini cable inputs, but a high quality small format 1/4 inch input mixer? I'd probably be tempted. Throw in analog filter, analog bucket brigade delay, and a small real spring reverb. Make it something special

Is the eq/comp is dual mono or only stereo ?
@dreamsaremaps
Жыл бұрын
Watched the whole video and am still confused (and cannot find a concrete answer on) how it handles dual mono! Does it record a stereo file each input panned hard? Mono files? Can they be panned in mixer for playback? Does it force each hard L/R when recording? What about effects on those inputs? Do I get 12 sends if using all dual mono inputs? Are settings shard per pair? Anybody able to fill me in? EDIT: fixed typo

SPLIT input mode puts both the right and left in the centre. When panning a SPLIT channel you crossfade between the Right and Left inputs of that channel, but it will always be placed in the centre. The recording will not retain the separate stereo signals, but will be recorded as you hear it. STEREO input mode is stereo as expected. Panning a stereo track to the Right gradually mutes the Left signal, and vice versa. MONO routes the LEFT signal and puts it in Centre. It ignores the RIGHT signal. MONO (B) routes the RIGHT and ignores the left. Panning a mono signal pans that selected sound to the right or left. In all cases, what you hear is what you record. So if you truly want to record 12 mono tracks in one go (not 6 stereo tracks) you have to use stereo while recording, even if that will make the sound hard pan R and L.

@@truecuckoo perfect, thank you! This is why I’m a Patreon; you rule! 😁 In that case, I suppose (or wonder) in instances I need to split some channels and want traditional monitoring on the go, perhaps it’s possible to put it in 12 input (er, output?…I mean 12 channels recording into a DAW, etc lol) mode, connect it to the iPad, and control input channels, routing, and software monitoring from AUM for instance? That’s assuming at that point I can monitor ONLY the DAW summed usb playback (which could be configured in a multitude of ways), which is generally how a traditional usb interface would handle such things if you put aside hardware input monitoring. Over all I’m trying to figure out if this is a viable solution for multitrack recording dawless jams that includes several mono instruments and puts the total instrument count above 6. Sounds like in-device, this would only be possible if it were ok that some of your mono instruments would monitor hard panned, and after transferring to a DAW you could de-interleave those channels and playback however you’d like. Not ideal, and personally I feel it’s a strange omission (and huge missed opportunity; a true 12 track recorder?? Wow!!) , but it is what it is and I’m sure they have their reasons. Do you see any reason the software monitoring in 12 (output?) via a DAW mode might run into issues? Something odd like the inability to mute input channels, etc?

@@dreamsaremaps thanks mate, and you’re raising great detailed questions! I didn’t show it in the video, but when you connect the TX-6 to a computer (or other host) in the USB settings you can select between MIX/ EXT. I was using MIX in the video, which has hardware monitoring and the full mixer experience + mixing the sound from the host. If you run it in EXT mode, you will not hear the internal mixer, but only the sounds coming from the computer or host. In my test just now I set Ableton’s audio buffer to 64, and yielded a pretty tight latency on my Mac. Acceptable for most operation. But for some very tight playing perhaps I would try to push it lower and hope for the best. Perhaps turn off all effects in your DAW while tracking and use 32 buffer. The mutes are in effect when tracking in EXT mode. So mutes will be recorded. But you won’t be able to record or hear any of the TX-6 FXI or FXII. Not even FXII in insert mode. The channel strip such as EQ, pan, filter and compressor will be recorded though.

@@truecuckoo sounds like an acceptable solution to my concern, one I had been unable to resolve until now, so thank you very much!! It’s so small, and so expensive, but I can imagine several scenarios where I’d very much like to take advantage of a use case this tiny thing could facilitate…there’s little out there that covers any of those cases in a truly portable and no compromise fashion…and certainly nothing else that covers all of them! I’ve gone from ‘there’s no way in hell I’m spending that sort of money’ for something I’d use primarily as a ‘utility’ device; to ‘this thing would put a nail in the coffin to ANY “ why didn’t I/couldn’t I hit record; or why am I always tearing down my main/desk-setup interface and ADAT and monitors and…; or why didn’t I multitrack; and so on. And that’s not even touching a single creative feature of it… It looks like you’re really passionate about it, and with your often traveling and performing lifestyle, I can see precisely why!
