FIRE’s Vice President of Campus Advocacy Alex Morey reacts to the shocking scenes out of The University of Texas-Austin last night.
Alex explains why riot police trampling peaceful pro-Palestinian protestors in designated public areas on campus is a blatant violation of the First Amendment, and why both Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the University of Texas-Austin administrators should be ashamed of themselves.
What transpired last night is also an egregious violation of a recent Texas law - which Gov. Greg Abbott himself signed - ensuring the outdoor areas of campus are available for free expression, including protests.
Unfortunately, Gov. Abbott’s public commentary makes his disregard for the First Amendment’s protection of political speech clear.
We encourage those whose First Amendment rights are threatened - at UT Austin or elsewhere - to contact FIRE: thefire.org/alarm.
