Super. This was the only Tyco loading/unloading accessory that I ever bought, mostly because I could reload the cars with a conveyor belt, and not have to reload by hand. I still have the Virginian hopper car that came with the set, six other Virginian cars, a Burlington car, and a Holly Sugar covered hopper, which usually runs empty, because of the cover. I still operate them to this day, so many decades later and so many bags of spilled coal and gravel all over the layout. Pro tip: If you haul ballast colored gravel, then the few pieces that fall out will help you ballast your track. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

Tyco was ahead of they time ! Unfortunately I was a child at the time Tyco was calling it quits I have yet to find ANY railroad company to make fun and fascinating products today. I had the railroad empire set in the 80s I hate to see Tyco gone.

When I was a kid back in the 70's I had Tyco model trains & I had one of these silver Virginian coal cars but I never had this hopper unloading set. I remember wondering why the car had those little doors on the bottom but now over 40 years later I can see why.

Problem with that system was the doors were closed by gravity but not latched in any way. The more the hopper cars traveled around the layout the more coal would leak through those doors from simple vibration and bumping over rail joints.

I have the Virginian set like you have, and it is a MIB set. I also have a blue B&M operating hopper, as well as the brown Pennsylvania, and the black Chesapeake & Ohio cars. I hope to get all the operating hopper cars that were made by Mantua/ Tyco.

I wish Walthers could do their taconite cars with an opening gate at the bottom. It's my dream to have a string of 50 or 60 of those little buggers running from an operating loadout to an automatic dumper like this and to have some hefty grades in between each point to give the engines a real workout. Aw well, I'll keep dreaming.

@K4JW - The Chessie F unit first came out in (No.224-03) 1977-1992.. All Tycos that have Hong Kong stamped on bottom are power torques - If it has silver metal tab - it is Mantua / Tyco - late 60's til about 1974. All Tyco engines use the same motor - just the trucks are different and can be swapped by removing the 3 screws on bottom

@garywayne1966 - Hi - Cool. I like the C& O - but that car can get pricey on Ebay. The B&M was before the Virginian. Good luck on collecting all the Operating cars from Tyco. I don't have them all either

@K4JW - On the oil - should be safe - but oils made specifically for model trains have been tested. Life Like makes model train oil - Hob E Lube by woodland scenics and the number one oil is Labelle Industries. They also make a special gear grease for model trains that can be used on all makes

@watchnu2 I think the U.S. Navy hopper will be the most difficult car to find. I see plenty of the red Burlington hoppers, and the black Reading cars are common as well.

On page 106 of the Model Railroader book "48 Top Notch Track Plans", there's a humorous layout that uses a pair of Tyco hopper unloading sets so the model railroad can deliver actual loads to actual customers: in this case, the track enters two cages to deliver bird seed to two birds. The need for the birds to get food every day ensures the railroad is operated every day.

The unloading insert will snap onto almost any piece of track, just cut a few ties out. 💙 T.E.N.
