1. Tyemirerriny is the name for the Largetooth Sawfish (scientific name Pristis pristis) used by the Malak Malak Traditional Owners who live at Daly River in the Northern Territory. This video features Malak Malak Rangers Amos Shields, Aaron Green and Theresa Lemon. They talk about the cultural importance of sawfish, and their wish to learn more about caring for sawfish as part of looking after the future of their country. They say that every animal means something in the ecosystem and is there for a reason. It is one of three videos made as part of a research project dedicated to raising awareness about threatened Largetooth Sawfish in Australia’s northern rivers. The project is led by Marine Biodiversity Hub scientist Dr Peter Kyne of Charles Darwin University Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods. Peter and his colleague Christy Davies of the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance Ltd work with the ranger groups on sawfish conservation and management initiatives.
