When I was fishing, you would rarely see blue or purple in flies except for salmon flies or other streamers. Now that I’ve gotten back to tying, both colors have gotten popular for all types of flies. Do you know if this is the result of research into fish vision? I love that thread you used for the body. Great stuff. I can see it making a great streamer body, especially for smelt imitations. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for dropping by FlyTyer1948, It's great to hear from you. I did dig into the blue and found that some fish have a wider range of color vision than us humans. They have 4 sets of cones that allow them to see into the UV and IR ranges. That being said, to see the blue, the wider range isn't required to see the blue. I also found out that the UV range of vision disappears as the trout mature. I guess there were studies done at some point that found the blue color stimulates the trout brain. I would add that the depth you fish the fly at will also make a difference. I think that reds start to fade first, Blue being a shorter wavelength can be seen deeper. Don't take this as gospel, I'm just going on memory here. Cheers

Thank you det282. There is a blue fly that I've used for years that's saved me from a few skunked days on the water. Cheers

Chimo Joe! I finally got all my fly orders done and had a free(ish) afternoon. Took advantage of the warm spring weather today and peaked at a couple of creeks. The bugs are starting to pop again. Can't wait until I can get out to fish them again. Cheers

Thank you Steve. I picked up most of the colors available so I'm sure you'll see more of it soon. It looks quite similar to the dollar store glitter thread that Ralph from SK gave me. Cheers, see you in the next video.

@@PiscatorFlies I remember you using glitter thread in a previous tutorial!! Was fortunate to get several antique fine gold spools of thread from my mom from her embroidery days!! Brand new, used till I started to use it . Price was $0.10 . Venture to guess 70 years old. Still works great.!!
