Beautifully tied as always. There is something special about simple flies with few materials that catch fish so well and also look amazing in the box.

Hi, Davy. Do you dye all your own stuf or do you buy it pre dyed. Also can you recommed a dye for fly tying materials. Thanks
@DavieMcPhail
Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I think I dye about 20% to 30% of the materialsI use just to get the odd colour I like or to get colours I can't buy in certain materials like CDC and some dubbings..I use Veniards dyes as they have the colours to suit the flies we fish. I've attached a link to their dyes as well as a chart showing marabou they have dyed using them.. All the very best Davie www.veniard.com/colour-cart www.veniard.com/veniard-dyes-tube/p/5668

Great looking fly. I really enjoy fishing suggestive patterns like this. They don't really look like anything in particular, but they look a little bit like everything.

A wee cracker and nice use of mole fur dub, which never gets much love. i like the idea of leaving a tuft of wing post over the back. I've used a similar dressing - the Grizzle Duster - in small sizes; but more often postless as a cripple to very good efffect on low, flat water, when spooky trout are just sipping. (Tiny and tail-less is good for midges/aphids and even in black when wee beetles/ants are on - it's very versatile) I first came across the postless Grizzle Duster in a book by Peter Gathercole (The Handbook of Fly Tying) about 20 odd years ago and he showed a stem-loop technique. I know other ways using mono, but I prefer the stem-loop as it's one less step - though maybe wasteful of genetic hackles! Perhaps you could show a postless variation some time, it's an interesting fly tying technique.

Would there be a substitute to the mole fur?
@DavieMcPhail
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, Rabbit underfur is a good sub but if you have not got this then just use a light grey dubbing or even wool would be fine as I have used this myself as well in the past and it still worked well.. All the very best Davie

Great to see the fly in action as well as how to tie. Was it that size you piggybacked the nymph on?
@DavieMcPhail
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart, It was a size 12 Cinnamon Caddis D.H that I I used to hang the nymph off later in the video though a size 12 Grey Duster version will work just as good as it will also take fish..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie
