Thanks, Davie. We're never too old to learn. I've been tying flies for 30 years but I just found out about your videos today and will no doubt learn a lot of new tricks!. I live in Newfoundland and every one of your patterns will find use here. We have a Scots ex-pat here - Ian Gall from Dundee. He has been teaching fly-tying for many years and is a great fisher, always happy to share knowledge - like yourself. You may know him or of him. Thanks again. Steve Walker

I tied this up a few years back as a euro pattern with a bead and it’s time to tie some more. Awesome pattern for catching fish all year just like David said. I tied several dozen the first time and they kept slipping back on the hook. Now after watching the video again I see I forgot a step with the super glue. Next batch should fish a little longer

Hi Davie. Thanks for your brilliant videos. I've learned so much from those. Your tip about the Ceramic Bobbin Holder has really improved my tying. Many of my tying experiences were extremely frustrating as I kept breaking the thread, often during the whip finish, which I just do with my fingers. I have a tool now but find it tricky to use. I'm practising though. Since buying the Tiemco HD bobbin holder I very rarely experience a break even with fine thread now. Thanks!

Hi Davie, I am new to tying flys and I'm having trouble getting the copper wire to "bite down" on the hook. I have been doing a little up and down the hook to start but this puts a bump in the wire. I really like your videos and appreciate that you give up your time to share your skills. Thank you

Hi Trevor Green, If you apply a little drop of superglue to the hook before you start the fly even if it dries it will give you much more grip and the wire should hold without any problems...Let me know how you get on... All the very best Davie..

Hi Davie Thanks for all the great videos. I have been using a Veniard's ceramic bobbin holder and UTC extra fine wire but the wire keeps breaking on me. This happens at all parts of the fly and looks a bit like the wire is being twisted as it comes out the holder. Any suggestions? Thanks Jimmy

Alex Adams As far as varnish goes, I use Sally Hansen Strong As Nails finger nail varnish which comes with a brush ( using sharp scissors you can trim the brush ends to a thin point). Gorilla Glue makes a super glue that has both brush and dab applicator.

Hi Mcphail, I am watching various pheasant tail videos to see which one I want to make, one person uses 16 hook, and you use 12 hook, now I understand you are the best fly tyer in the world, but is there such a thing as "THE" right hook, or is every fly modified? In other words, there is no such a thing as the normal fly? I have OCD, and if I cannot get the "RIGHT" fly, I cannot sleep.
@DavieMcPhail

Hi Mason, Many tyers will have a favourite pattern in which they'll use pheasant tail fibres and the version I tied in the video is my favourite. I will tye them in all sizes and colours as it will represent many species of mayfly, midge and even caddis in all the stages of their life depending how is is presented and fished.. This is why there's so many patterns out there on the internet as it's so good to use and have in a fly pattern, so all you have to do is pick a hook to suit the size and stage of the fly you are trying to represent..I hope this answers your question... All the very best Davie

Hi Hunter, Extra small or small UTC wire is very good and will tye you most trout size nymphs, they are coated so they wind well on most bobbin holders..I would use these wires as a guide to finding bulk spools which you will find in some electrical companies like Maplins here in the UK... I have caught more fish on this fly than any other I have fished.... All the very best Davie
