This looks fun, may I suggest taking a small piece of tape to hold the legs together and keep them out of the way while tying the fly... Then trim all 4 legs at once as you cut the tape off after the whip finish...

This one is RIGHT in my wheelhouse! I fly fish predominantly for panfish, since there are very few trout waters in my area. I've seen this bug before, and now I'm definitely going to try it! I love catching gills and tiny largemouth on dries and foam flies!

I've been to panfish on the fly a few times, good stuff. Looks like I'm not alone on seeing this Bug before, but I don't remember where. Also I've seen similar style bugs with a foam cylinder tucked in the fold for eyes. But I've never seen a popper hook with a horizontal kink like that, looks tailor made for that Bug. Great find and meet at that show Matt, thanks!

Appreciate it Joe! I hope you and the family had a great Thanksgiving. We had a pretty low-key relaxing weekend at the farm. I got out on the Savage for a few hours Saturday morning. I fished dry flies the whole time, because I'm stubborn like that. And only one fish all day. :-)

What is the largest fly can you use for panfish? I only used small flies or those little Gaines poppers for them, since I thought they would be appropriate (or maybe New England panfish are smaller?).
@SavageFlies
Жыл бұрын
That's a good question Bob. I typically don't go bigger than a 10, sometimes an 8 for my panfish bugs, but Bart gave me these hooks at the show in NJ and they were size 8s so I suppose that's a good size for them. But you know something else... I was fishing out of my float tube in a local pond last summer. I was hoping to catch some largemouth and was using a Lefty's Red & White (a big long-shank, size 6 streamer), and caught three decent sunfish with it (no bass). And if I recall, I didn't have any missed strikes so these three were certainly able to get a size 6 in their mouth. :-)

I've tied some of these and agree the cutters would make life easier and the flies more uniform. I like the shape because the wide heads stop the fly from being swallowed by bluegill with their small mouths.
@SavageFlies
Жыл бұрын
You're 100% right Mel... and I think Bart even mentioned that's why he made it like he did- to keep panfish from swallowing too much of it.

Oh yeah! I'll definitely be tormenting the bluegill at the local pond with versions of this one come spring! Like Jeffrey I'm thinking sunfish aren't the only ones this pattern will attract if I make it a bit bigger. Hmmmm....the possibilities are endless! Thanks Matt!
