Many of the fly patterns in the book "A Compendium of Canadian Fly Patterns" by Robert H. Jones and Paul C. Marriner, use polar bear hair. This hair is still commercially available, but we don't know for how much longer. The bears are under pressure throughout the Arctic due to decline sea ice, so I'd rather not use the hair. Back when these patterns were created, polar bears were abundant.
Rather than describe the reasoning for the substitutes in every video, I've lumped them all into this vid. I will then reference this explanation video in the cards of future tying videos, when needed.
