If a tarpaulin or bag needs to be tied in position, and it doesn't have eyelets, you can tie cord directly to the fabric or plastic. Doing this enables you to tie a sheet of polythene in place to create a shelter or to cover a load. It is also handy when you want to fill a bag, but you don't want it to sit on the ground.
A simple backpack can be made from a sack and a length of rope by tying the rope to the bottom corners of the sack. A simple cow hitch can be used to close the bag... and this also anchors the upper part of the 'straps' to the bag.
I have made up some lanyards which enable me to attach a cord to a bag quickly and securely. I use these to keep a plastic or cloth bag off the ground when I'm processing meat on a hunting trip.
In this video I've demonstrated how I tie a Celtic button knot, an alpine butterfly loop and a slipped buntline hitch. Other folks have posted some very good diagrams or demonstrations online showing how these knots are created, and they may be worth checking out if you find my description hard to follow.
Best wishes from Nelson, New Zealand.
