Thank you for sharing. Fran (Betters) or Francis (I was a kid, so Francis) once taught a young boy to fly fish on the West Branch of the Ausable River. My dad had met Fran many years before, at the bar of the Whiteface Inn in Wilmington, NY, on New Years Eve. I was fortunate, very fortunate. Even visited his home once and have a photographic memory of the rifle collection he had laid out in an empty room on the floor as if marking every 5 minutes on the face of a clock.

I lived in Northern NY in the mid 90s - near Massena. A few times a summer, my Dad would take us down to camp and fish the Ausable. St Regis was another favorite. We would always stop at Frans shop to buy flies though. Good memories of watching Fran tie while my Dad and him talked. I was just learning to tie so it was fascinating to me watching such a legend at work.

Doc, thank you for your history with Fran. I had met him in 1963 and visited his shop an hour and a half away as often as I could. I have tied and used his Ausable wulff pattern on most of the streams I've fished over the years. Once the spinner stage of our May Flies emerge, various sizes of this fly work throughout the Summer and Fall here in Vermont. Send me your email address if you want and I can fill you in with a little more about Fran. sincerely, Peter

What floating do you use?

Frogs Fanny (just a very light dusting, applied before fishing) for fine dry flies; if I forget that, Gink is my second line of defence.
