Ya'll were iffy on the voice because I've seen all your other country reactions and this is your introduction to that Appalachia hollar twang. That's my favorite kind of country singin.... it's more prevalent in bluegrass

Yep! And his voice might not be as pretty as other singers but Tyler's tellin' stories about us mountain folk and honestly I don't think you can encapsulate that life without his kind of hoarse, weary, soulful moanin'.
@lyndaabner5093

I agree. Tyler Childers has become Kentucky's unofficial poet of the people. And our diction and use of language can make it sound less processed than the so called country we are spoon fed on radio. Much like rap that is mainstream is not reflective of true rap as a genre. Simply because people don't understand the culture it grows from.

He's voice is REAL. I dig it! Most of the music reviewed has studio production behind it and changes drastically in a majority of cases. Nothing worse that loving a song and then hearing the artist perform it in person live and it sounds like cats mating. There's a video of Tyler performing live at what looks like a bar and it's the same if not better than this version. Just found this song and artist 2 days ago but finding out right now that he's a fellow KY Boy makes me love it even more. Give'em Hell Tyler! See you up Whitehouse Road!

Noah. I agree. Nose to the grindstone or (in my opinion Hard Times) show more what Tyler is about. Stronger lyrics, more heart. Whitehouse Road is fun, but not his best foot forward. Recommendation: (Country) Whitey Morgan’s - “Waiting Around to Die” He’s like a darker and more rough around the edges version of Chris Stapleton and I know how much y’all love him and his music. So this song will be a nice treat to your ears. The song is amazing as is, but there’s a video with it that, in my opinion, it adds to the experience tenfold. I’d highly recommend playing the video along with the song. If y’all make it a video at all. I love your guys’ videos, and I’d love it even more if y’all would show Whitey Morgan some of that Free Thinker attention. Fair warning, I’m gonna post this on EVERY video I can until you guys do it. If y’all do listen to it and do think it’ll work out to make a video on it or you literally can’t make a video on it for whatever reason, please respond to this so I know and can stop spamming this comment on y’all’s videos. Here is the direct link: kzitem.info/news/bejne/u36ewINoaoV4fGk If anyone knows how good this song is and/or wants to see their take on it, please thumb up this comment as to increase the chances of them seeing it and/or choosing it for a future video. This is one of his least interesting songs. His best stuff includes "Lady May" (a tribute to his wife), "I will follow you to Virgie" (a tribute to an old lady from his home town who passed away), "Hard Times," and "All Your'n" Tyler really captures so much of the home state we share. A lot of his music is specific to this region, for example: "White House Road" is a real place in East Ky.

I know this is an older video but I want to try and explain why Tyler means so much to Kentuckians and country folk. His voice sounds like home. His lyrics and the stories he tells are the thread that runs thru every generation here, stories of hardships and joy that have been passed down in these hills for centuries on front porches and old country stores. Lots of the great country singers and songwriters weren't real strong singers but we love and connect with them nonetheless.

Tyler Childers's voice is quintessentially Appalachian. Anyone from this region of the country recognizes that sound, that voice. You can't manufacture it, it's authentic. He said the song was about a guy who he used to work with delivering for Sears in KY. You got paid by how long it took you to get there so they went the longest way possible. When he talks about running these roads, he's literally talking about driving on the two lane, twisty/turny 2 lane roads in Appalachia. I live in WV, in the middle of nowhere and its frankly a blast just driving to work. It's a country thing. Younger people drive around for recreation, and then party out in the sticks. I agree with those who say this wasn't the best song for you to be exposed to Tyler's work. This is a crowd-pleaser when he plays live. He usually plays it with his band and it's rowdy and fun. It's probably his best known song. But Nose on the Grindstone, Hard Times, Born Again, and many others are better lyrically. The drug theme in many of his songs is a very accurate portrayal of modern Appalachia. It is mighty hard living and as most people have heard, though you might not connect it immediately to this song, but there is a serious drug crisis out here. It's getting more serious every day. I don't think there is a better artistic representation of modern Appalachia to be found anywhere.

In my opinion, there’s better TC songs out there. Lady May is amazing, Born Again, Universal Sound. All are very deep and intelligent songs and beautifully sang.

He’s far from other country artists he’s on another level than what we hear on the radio today obviously country lesson was missed his story telling is what’s gonna make him huge I listen to his songs a lot and close my eyes and can envision his lyrics playing out kind of a folky country played by a badass dude

Y'all need to do some Stevie Ray Vaughn.. Especially for Ryan. Texas Flood, Little Wing, Voodoo Child (cover of a Hendrix song after buying Jimi's guitar) - pick one. BUT, It's got to be one of his live performances so Ryan can take the talent in.

That ain't country music. That ain't bluegrass music. That is mountain music. It's a flavor all it's own. Only if you come from the hills as we put it would you ever know the hardships of mountain living, it's good and bad, and the beauty God created it to be. Tyler Childers does a beautiful job expressing this genre in both his lyrics and his choice of chords. Tony Walkingstick, Cherokee NC

You guys are great , my son passed two years ago and the one legacy he left was diversity and appreciation of all genre. We loved to find music that neither had listened to or lyrics that were significant to us or a place in time. This became the weirdest play list you could imagine, as I think back he was way more open to my music but I do appreciate the new artist and sound because after all music is just a beat within a rhythm, providing expression behind the lyrics of there story The one quote by Elton John that I think all artist should think thru .. “ music that you sell today , would you be willing to preform it tomorrow (30 to 50 ) years ? Thanks for sharing your channel !

I heard an interview with him and he wrote this while working as an assistant appliance delivery driver back in his early 20’s near White House Road somewhere in Kentucky. He wrote it about work I assume?

Man, I *love* Tyler Childers. Lotta people been mentioning "Nose on the Grindstone". It's a powerful song, but I'd recommend "Feathered Indians" as an example of his songwriting ability. Simple, but heartfelt and earnest. And yeah, I get he's not the best singer, but he's damn good and pretty emotive.

I'll take his voice over most and his realism over them all. William Elliott Whitmore has the line "the blubird can sing, but the crow's got the soul"

Fundamentally agree with you. Tyler's voice evokes a lot of emotion in me, drags me into any of his songs... but if we're comparing pure technical ability, Chris Stapleton and Jennifer Nettles have got him on range and vocal agility. Tyler probably matches Stapleton on soulfulness for me though. I love his music. Looking out for Live at Red Barn Radio I & II re-release at the end of the month!
