The Type 24 pillbox was one of several standard types built all across Britain in 1940 as part of the defences against an expected invasion by the Germans. This one is located near Newbridge in Oxfordshire and looks out over a meadow next to the River Thames - the river acts as a natural anti-tank ditch. The pillbox is part of the GHQ Red Stop Line, a series of defences aimed to stop, or at least slow down, the expected blitzkrieg attack in this part of the country. Luckily, it never had to be tested.
