I absolutely love that Last Episode shows Shirou's true nature as a connecting thread of all the plot elements of the previous routes. This is why Fate Shirou is my favorite...even though he doesn't fully come to terms with his views in the route itself...grows more as a person during the rest of his life than the other Shirou's and Arturia remains his guiding star until the end. That's poetry man

That backstory section took me back to last year, reading through and experiencing all of those emotions. This is a great showcase and analysis of Shirou. Before reading the VNs I didn’t really find him extremely interesting, (save for his opposition with Archer in UBW), but the VN really shed a new light on him for me. Personally, while it might be a shared opinion, I still like HF Shirou the most out of the three. It takes what you already knew about him and what was established to turn it on it’s head. It was the route that really made me relate and identify with him (thoughts wise of course, I WISH I had an artificial phantasm), especially when it came to his decisions about Sakura. All in all, he’s become one of my favorite protagonists of any media. (I still have to continue Tsukihime, but we’ll see if Shiki takes that spot.)

He is one of my favorites in series and see how he starts and ends each stories and my favorite end for him is in ubw as shirou challenges himself and wins against his own ideals and rin makes a good fit to him as she makes sure to help shirou learn to love himself and be more selfish as he is crazy to save others in a self destructive self and pity. Anyone who disregards Illyaverse Shirou sorely misunderstands his character. He may no be a magus and is used mostly for gags, but he’s very much Shirou Emiya. A lot of his character is presented in omake chapters of the manga not adapted to the anime because there’s not a lot to work with for laughs. Illyaverse Shirou is a healthy version of Shirou with a good family life and plenty of friends. What many people don’t see is that he has the same determination that the Stay Night versions of Shirou are known for. Much like in the main timeline, Shirou met Rin in middle school where she saw him attempting tirelessly to make a high jump after everyone had gone home. He got injured doing this and Rin patched him up in the nurse’s office. When she asked him why he doing such an impossible and ultimately pointless task, Shirou replied that he simply wanted to do it, seeing beauty in reaching out for something even if it is unattainable. The view of the is the reason for Rin, Luvia, and Sakura’s affections for Shirou, having all seen this side of him at some point. He’s essentially Stay Night Shirou in a “normal” world. I personally prefer him much more to the polar opposite, deconstruction, Miyuverse Shirou. Not saying that version is bad, but he’s definitely on the lower end of my favorite Shirou Emiya list.

The work you put into this deserves my respect due to your on the point presentation and analysis of the important parts that needed covered. IMO the UBW (and now HF) adaptions mostly convey Shirou's internal arc adequately, though it's handled far more subtly and I get that some people cannot pick up on that on a first watching of UBW. Though obviously the FSN Visual Novel is far more in depth due to being like 100 hours, as is the nature of that kind of adaption, the anime's (Ufo UBW and HF, not DEEN) have to convey entire internal monologues as mere moments of facial expression or brief flashes, and IMO they do that as well as could possibly be done as an adaption. This is clearly shown through how UBW and HF are far more engaging than DEEN Stay/Night which is an actually bad adaption of FSN.
@nishchayjain1121

I feel the same way, as much the visual novel did a better job of exploring his character well than the anime adaptations by inner monologues, the anime adaptations also captured some aspects about Shirou’s character. Heaven’s feel anime did it better than UBW anime, but UBW also fairly did a great job as well.

@brucewayne8550

It's simple. Shirou's reason for even wanting to become a Hero of Justice isn't because he himself wants to become one, it's because he feels that he has a need to be one in Kiritsugu's stead and without it, he has nothing left. He helps people not out of altruistic reasons but because he's fundamentally broken in that he only feels happy and smiles when he's saving or helping people. So in turn, you originally have a character that only wants to fulfill an impossible dream out of an obligation to someone else and a selfish desire to be happy, all the while ignoring the fact that to save people means to ally with one side and forsake another, meaning that straight from the get-go his ideal is impossible to be achieved yet he still tries anyway. A person who lives entirely through others because otherwise he is nothing without them and a dream that he can't fulfill yet refuses to admit that he's wrong. Additionally, to want to save people- it means there has to be a villain. It's what Kirei tells him on the first night of the war, that he should rejoice because for good to triumph there must also be a great evil to overcome. Meaning to feed his guilt, Shirou NEEDS people to be in danger so that he can save them and that revelation actually shocks and twists him inside. It's why Shirou has a monologue where he thinks that if you could just define an absolute evil and absolute good, things would be a lot easier.
@derekbates4316
3 жыл бұрын
@@brucewayne8550 But, in his fight with Archer, we learn he does it out of a desire to experience the kind of joy Kiritsugu felt when he saved him; how's that hypocrisy? Hypocrisy is doing 1 thing and then another. Hypocrisy is Kirei, for being an ordained priest and yet he goes AGAINST it's philosophies. Hypocrisy is Illya, whose original purpose for fighting was to torture Shirou, yet upon meeting him decides against it. Hypocrisy is Rin, who lectures Shirou that prioritizing yourself is more important, and yet she goes to great lengths worrying over him and throws away her own goals, even safety to protect him, Sakura, even Shinji. You can argue that, sure, but when saving Shinji, even Gil said it would be easier for her to simply kill him. No matter how you choose to look at it, Rin did sacrifice herself, in a way, for others. And, it could be said that Archer is a hypocrite since his argument is to not throw your life away by fighting for the sake of others, but is fighting Shirou for Shirou's sake. Sure, it's to prevent another him from appearing, but it doesn't benefit himself since it wouldn't change his status. He says it's for himself, but really it's to prevent Shirou from going down the same path, thus he's fighting for someone else. I think by calling Shirou a hypocrite, he's calling himself one out of the irony & frustration of the situation, you can even see how enraged he becomes, but when Shirou reminds him of why they chose to be a Hero of Justice, his admission that "he won" is essentially saying: "you're right".
