I also started out learning html and css and I hated it so much. I was bored to tears by it and I dreaded starting up those learning modules. I'm now in an associates program for network communications specialist and I find it to be very exciting.

I was in a finance and accounting program for 3 semesters and I decided to transfer to IT.. I graduated honours with a business degree in information technology, the careers of IT is amazing and the salaries is outstanding as a System Administrator. I recommend majoring in IT if you want a business degree, the starting wage after you graduate is excellent then if you graduate majoring in finance, accounting, or Human Resources

Your question is a bit difficult to understand. The title IT professional sounds very broad. honestly I would consider you one if you simply work in IT in the first place. I like how majors and education programs are very specific in your country, like you can just take a college degree in short time and backup your career with important certificate like Cisco and microsoft certificate to start your career in ITs field. Here, I have studied computer engineering, which is very vague major with many missing important courses, although that my program is ABET accredited. I have graduated in June, realizing that I have no specific sharp skills, I only know a bit of everything, little electrical, little networking and some programming skills - not even developing as I'm not up to that level!-. When I graduated, a political and economical crisis happened, the market was and still suffering, and as a graduate with raw skills, nobody is willing to hire me :). I love coding and I'm good at it, but i'm not skilled enough to start my career as a junior developer because I didn't study web development, android or IOS, and even the software engineering course was hell because of my bad instructor and I didn't learn well, I feel that I have to learn by myself from free online courses and do some self projects. I really like self-learning and that doesn't bother me, what I hate is the fact that my B.Sc degree has not give me the proper knowledge to work a head in market, rather I still have much more work to do. My rockstar colleagues who have high GPA continued their master degree, and everyone else is still without a job. If I have a regret, is that I choose computer engineering rather that computer science, I really don't advice anyone to go for that major, unless you know really what you want and what you will do.

Good video, just a correction tho: There actually is a difference between CIO and CTO in some companies. If you're looking at a Product based tech company, the CIO is in charge of the "IT" stuff (managing the data, networks, servers, etc.), the CTO is actually head of engineering. So in a company like Honda for example, the CIO will be in charge of managing the data (e.g. sales) and the CTO will be in charge of the cars being design and built. Great video, regardless.
@Itcareerquestions
8 жыл бұрын
+jagjit bhatia Yeah this is definitely true. Although there are many companies that use this "titles" in the incorrect way. So generally speaking there's usually not a HUGE difference unless you are dealing with a large company like Honda. Thank you for commenting, definitely great information.

To sum it up, these are the broad categories: Software Developer/Engineer Tech Support IT Infrastructure Engineer Management What I would add: Cybersecurity Specialist Software Architect, maybe (unless every project has its own designated architect)
@johnbauer9972
8 жыл бұрын
You're off base with a few of these roles. CTO and CIO are different as well as architects and engineers. A CTO will generally chose the technology and course for a product or technology development team, what development languages, frameworks etc, sometimes this has to do with a product internally but it's usually an outward facing product. The CIO will generally supervise IT infrastructure and support as well as governance and compliance which includes corporate and security policies. These two roles are sometimes orchestrated by a larger role called the COO but sometimes fall under the CEO. There are some overlap but when you dig into the activities of each there are very unique domains of knowledge for each of these roles. When it comes to architects and engineers and admin/analysts, I think of them as "designers" and "implementers" and "doers". Here's a couple quick examples. A security architect will sometimes evaluate and design a security solution to meet a set of requirements, let's take a large scale firewall deployment for example. The architect will determine the technology, scalability and high level design to fit the requirements, understanding the capabilities of systems and having a large technical knowledge range of networking products and protocols will determine what technology is used and how it is deployed. A network engineer will take this and build out all of the connection requirements and configurations. A network admin will likely maintain firewall rules, network health and any grunt work. In the case of building a "Cloud" the architect might choose the lay of the land for infrastructure in different locations, storage and compute requirements, the engineer will install and implement configurations and cloud admins will assist with guest health and deployment. There are a lot of overlap in roles like this and in small companies sometimes there's one person that does it all, I just want your viewers to understand if you're looking at architect roles at a Fortune 500 and you've only maintained a single firewall for the past 5 years you might be a little out of your league... but give it a shot if you think you can do it! You are right though, all of the titles and roles can be a little intimidating, the best is to get your foot in the door, start learning and start doing, before you know it you'll be the "Principal Architect" of something. (In 5-15 years :)

You also need to be careful with one thing. Once you complete a project they asked you to do, it is very likely to get fired, as they will not need you anymore! It happened to me, and some of my friends. They will do politely ie "You did a great job and should be proud of yourself, but we don't need you anymore". There are no permanent jobs in this field, unfortunately.

I'm in college, in I.T. studies, 3rd semester, and still haven't found something like 'this is me', you know, like, all my studies are 90% are all about programmings and coding stuffs that I DONT really have interest in it. And I don't know if I'm passionate in 'networking' stuffs yet or whatever, but I think because I haven't studied it yet, maybe? Just asking for an opinion : Should I suck these stuffs for now and wait for the next semesters or what? Thank you.
@Itcareerquestions

+Raymissa Wukfy I would check with your counselor at school or someone who can help manage your classes and see what else is available or see what is coming up next semester. Some of the things that you are learning will be beneficial so riding it out isn't a bad thing either. Of course this really depends on what you want to do getting out of college. If none of the things you are doing or are going to be doing interest you, start looking into a different program.

Can you work from home and do you need a computer to learn if so what kind
@JJFlores197
3 жыл бұрын
That depends on the type of job and employer. There are a fair number of IT jobs that can be done remotely but your employer may or may not allow that. And of course, there are some jobs or aspects of some jobs that can only be done in-person. It really helps to have a computer to learn IT. You don't need anything fancy, just as long as it is functional.

Hi functional roles such as business analysts let you work with the latest technologies without having to code. You get to design how a system should work without having to build it!

I want to do an IT career that has to do with building computer what should I pick?
@JJFlores197

You may want to look into PC repair. I'm not trying to discourage you, but this would generally be an entry-level IT job. Its a good way to get started in the IT field, but I don't know that it would be something I would make a career out of. Custom built PCs are kind of a niche market in the grand scheme of things.

Hi, I am currently in this field and would recommend starting with MS SQL Server and learning to write SQL to extract and transform data. Next step would be to learn visualization tools. You can start with charts in Excel but then moving to Power BI or Tableau.

+ORI RA IT Consultants do a large variety of information technology jobs. It really varies though. You don't have to know any programming to get into some I.T. jobs. Depending on where you are at in Illinois there are tons of great opportunities and internships/volunteer work to be found. Speaking many different languages will always be a huge bonus for you provided you have excellent communication/customer service skills and you know what you are doing with technology.

Hi Zack. I've been watching a couple of your videos. I'm new to IT, but I'm finishing up my first semester at a technical college going for IT Network Specialist. Anyway, I was wondering if it was absolutely critical that I get my first entry-level job in the help desk position dealing with ppl over the phone, or if it would be possible to somehow bypass that job or find one that would not be as intimidating as talking to ppl over the phone and not knowing how to help fix problems related to their computers. Sure, I've got three more semesters to go, but if you have any recommendations besides help desk as far as an entry-level jobs or internships go for me to look for, would you please let me know? The nice thing is at my school, is that I cannot graduate without doing an internship credit, so I will at least have internship experience if I hope to even graduate and get the Associate's degree in Networking. Wish they would've done that for my four-year college. I'm stuck with a Bachelor's degree in Business Mgmt that I can't do anything with because I don't have any kind of experience outside of retail. Oh well. I'm really liking this Cisco stuff though now.

+Chris Hey, I apologize for the long delay on this response! You can definitely get some type of Junior Network tech position right off the bat, but it definitely depends on the area that you are in, and what I mean by that is in some area's there are a lot of Junior positions like this. For instance, I live outside of Chicago and there are ALWAYS junior network jobs. You could definitely look into internships with companies that may need network help and try to get some experience that way as well. I always mention that starting out in help desk is a great place to get your foot in the door. This is mainly because you will understand how a business environment works, and how their specific environment is laid out. It also let's you learn some good skills a long the way. Cisco is great! Keep at it and good luck!
