Types Of LG LED TV Backlight Failures Episode 3
Grouped broadly, there are two types of backlight failures mainly the
1. Mechanical failures and
2. Electrical failures
In the video here are the timestamps for each backlight failure.

Mechanical failures occur when the LED strip moves out of its place or when the lens on top of the LED light falls down. Another type of failure occurs in edge lit backlight TV's when the strip moves out of place and so light from the backlight strip is not scattered evenly.
The last type of mechanical failure I have seen is heat damage. This is when the failing LEDs produce so much heat that it burns the light scattering assembly. The result is a mess of deformed paper and soot. And that's a big problem when it comes to repair.
Electrical failures
This just to refers to unusual electric current flowing in the LEDs. Sometimes mechanical failures can occur concurrently with electrical failures. The types of LED electrical failures I have solved are listed below. I have started from the most common problem and gradually going down to lesser known problems.
Total LED failure where all LEDs do not turn ON. This can be as a result of one LED or more failing and thus creating an open circuit.
Partial failure where some of the LEDs are off completely. This creates dark spots on the screen, a very annoying thing.
Blinking lights, the most annoying problem of all. I call this problem "See Me If You Can".
Light up then go off completely after a few minutes or seconds.
LEDs turn off after some time and if the TV is switched off and ON again, the LEDs work perfectly again. That's the most difficult problem to detect as a technician. Some TVs can work up to 5 hours perfectly for example. Can you sit for that much time watching TV trying to figure out the problem?
Backlight problem caused by power supply failure instead of LED failure. Here you may have to replace the power supply and the LED strips or just the power supply only.
The blue screen. The most rare type of backlight failure is when the LEDS emit blue instead of white light. You have to see this problem to believe it.
Now regarding the second problem above, I created a short video to help you diagnose if your LED TV has dark spots. From my third KZitem episode you could tell that it is very easy to diagnose a bright spot but not a dark spot.
In fact your TV could have a dark spot and you wouldn't even recognise it. By viewing uniform colours on your LED screen however you can tell if you have dark spots. Dark spots can last for quite sometime before the whole backlight system fails completely. Its better to know if you have the problem so that you can be better prepared for tomorrow. Here is the video I use to diagnose dark spots. There is a direct download link after the embedded video below. You can download the video to a USB drive and play it on your LED TV.
