Sailed thru one cyclone on Dawn Princess on way to Hawaii, everything in lockdown, many people sick, dining rooms lost food and crockery as they crashed to the floor. Most stayed in their cabins. Black and white photos released next day were spectacular with the photographer capturing waves crashing over the top rail. Sitting in international cafe, deck 5, next day, water was above the portholes as ship ploughed into troughs. The captain came on at 10am to say how well the ship performed but he sounded exhausted so it must have been an incredible night for all. Never felt unsafe, captain kept us up to date whenever he could. For some hardy cruisers it had been quite exciting.

@@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne absolutely. Another time on way to New Zealand an earthquake in south America triggered a tsunami which was heading towards us. We were updated as to the waves location and by the time we reached Auckland we could get off if we chose or ride out the wave in the harbor as the ship had to leave the dock and drop anchor along with the navy and other ships. Warned to go to higher ground when it hit if ashore. Stayed on board and by the time wave hit, it was only a metre swell. Such is cruising. There are always adventures. In this case anticipation was greater than the reality. But it's nice to know the ships are well designed to cope with many events.

What do you like to do on your time off? Do you like to stay at home in the UK, live abroad, or go backpacking around the world? Additionally, do Princess vessels still utilize paper charts in combo with ECDIS (I noticed the paper planning chart posted behind you)? As Senior Second is it your job to plot routes and prepare voyage plans? When moored alongside a berth do you stand a deck watch instead of a bridge watch? If so, what’s that routine involve? Regards

Thank you Alfie. This was a very interesting introduction to maritime meteorology with regard to cyclones/hurricanes and typhoons. Perhaps you could present something on ship navigation when you have time. All that good stuff about "dead reckoning", speed, time and distance, set and drift etc. Cheers.

It really was not bad here in the Philippines around Manila. I'm a bout 60 miles NW of Manila Bay. It is now 2:11Pm on Saturday, and a bright sunny day. The storm came through last nights the highest winds at our compound was about 25 kts. The rain was constant but not heavy. Most years we get four to five Typhoon a year, this was about the lightest of them.

I heard that the Queen Elizabeth's navigation crew became very creative while in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) because they made the ship's wake spell out the letters "C U N A R D" while they were out there for the satellite to track them. Can you please confirm this and also say something if other ships did something similar?
@SameShipDifferentDay
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Selwyn Clyde Alojipan yes they did it with the past track on the ECDIS. Not with the wake itself. Pacific Aria did something similar but instead drew the coastline of Australia

Alfi, what is exactly “gray water”?
@reececollison5101
4 жыл бұрын
Grey water is water that has been used in the shower and washing dishes etc. This water then gets discharged into the sea (as it’s only shower and dish water it’s not of any damage to the environment) and new water is taken on board to be desalinated and used. Grey water is not allowed to be discharged in harbour for some reason. Black water is all the, er, ‘faecal matter’ produced by crew and passengers and is absolutely not allowed to be discharged into the sea under any circumstances, that’s taken away into sewers when the ship’s in port.
@Jelly465
4 жыл бұрын
@@reececollison5101 Most ships have their own sewerage plants on board to proccess the Black water to grey / better than grey water standard
