Its a sad day for West Virginians and the United States of America . Not only did Senator Byrd watch out for West Virginia he watched out for the United States as well. He was a role model to alot of people young and old. It's also a great day for Mr. & Mrs. Byrd knowing that they have been reunited together again and how much happier they are today.

West Virginia is mired in poverty, stagnant wages, a poor education system and the number 1 employer in this state is Wal Mart. As a lifelong native and resident of West Virginia, and not someone who did a project for a class, let me assure you that Robert C. Byrd has had absolutely nothing to do with success in this state and a great deal to do with perpetuating the problems. This state flounders in poverty while Byrd erected a statue of himself, on the taxpayer's dime, in the state capital.

I completely disagree with you. I had to do a project on pork spending for class and I did it on Robert Byrd. When I was done I realized pork doesn't equal waste. His projects are to help native West Virginias in the areas with the most need. He isn't spending money on outlandish projects. If I was a West Virginian I would be proud that Robert Byrd is my Senator.

@farblonjet not sure if i know what you mean. i don't think comparisons are in order. everyone makes mistakes regardless of whether someone else points them out or not. i am simply stating that i like a person who admits when they were wrong and i think that shows good character. seems like less smoke and mirrors there.

The way people can bash the memory of a man who was brave enough to admit to his mistakes only after he is dead shows cowardice in my opinion. As a proud resident of West Virginia I mourn his death like many others in my state. WV would not have anything without him. The numerous buildings and highways in the state are evidence of all the times he fought to secure money to an area who needed. He was a Son of Marshall and a damn good one at that Marshall U. mourns him.

@utwombat Only those that know it would be politically expedient. He was a master politician and only a small handful of people have come out to challenge his polished image and the allegations against him are very serious. Read Trance formation of America, that book has not been refuted once in court and the legal documents supporting the allegations are very real.

You're right, what I was trying to say was the liberal candidate got the popular vote in 4 of the last 5 presidential elections to point to a modern trend. For some reason I typed 6 of the last 7, which not only isn't accurate, it goes back to when Reagan was in office, which was truly the conservative heydey. It's an entirely different world in the 21st century than it was in the 1980's.

Let me assure you that I am a West Virginian and I am not proud that Byrd is my Senator. Ashamed and embarrassed but not proud. Pork does equal waste. The great majority of his wasteful projects do not generate any income at all once they are completed. The only ones who benefit from many of his projects are the construction companies from Ohio and Pennsylvania that come to West Virginia to build the latest Byrd project. How does that help his constituents?

I'm not sure if you're implying that I'm racist or if Byrd was. If you're implying that I'm racist I can ensure you I am not. As for Byrd, I did write that comment two years ago and my opinion of him has significantly changed. Mainly this is from knowing more about him and his politics. While a complex figure, he had very very serious faults. Worst perhaps his opposition to gay rights. Not to mention his membership, if only briefly, in the KKK. In fact I remove the comment.

No, Jimmy. I was not implying your were a racist, only Byrd. I know no one is perfect and we all have things we are going to have to answer for when our number is up. The problem I had with Byrd was that, to me anyway, he was the worst example of a politician. He said and did things that not one of us would get away with, and he did it with the Senate Dem's and media saying, "Senator Byrd is the conscience of the Senate." Ha!
