Hello guys your tasting review was great. I'am a former french soldier and if I may give you some advice : Those RICR are suposed to be eaten in order Breakfeast : Muesli,coffe ,and some chocolate crackers with jam Lunch : Pork paté with salted crackers and one of the cans the pasta one would be great Dinner : the soup (please next time put more water please) Parmentier de canard after that chocolate cream and a cup of tea or two For all the small snacks like pâte de fruits and commando bar nougat and the rest of the biscuits (crackers) you are supossed to eat them all day long on the field every time you like or can. And for everyone : a lot of these items look "civillian" like comming from your supermarket and it's done on purpose to remind you of the coutry when you are a soldier in operation a thousand of kilometers away from your country. Some of the brands are quite famous in France like the mont blanc chocolate. That was just my two cents. Tous gaillards pas de trainards.

As a reformed french soldier, there is a certain technic to cook the dish, you have to let it close and put it in the good side on the fire and after a bit of time put it on the other side (so the two side are cooked) after that you grab the can and shake it so that all the foods are mixed ! After that you can open it and enjoy it ! 👌🏼 For the soup, i was use to trade them with some of my mates so i could put 2 bags of the same soup for smthg like 50-75cl of water and a bit of salt 🤌🏼

Am I in the military? No Will I ever be in the military and have these? Also no Did I watch this whole thing and judge the food as current French resident? Absolutely yes. Muesli is eaten cold with milk, the pork would have been rillettes like pulled pork pâté, there wouldn't be creamer as its all drunk black, nougat is very popular in France, the duck is like a shepherds pie but with duck. The sweet drink would probably have been for a large amount of water as to not make a sweet drink. The 'crackers' would have had the salted ones for starter, cereal ones for jam, chocolate ones as snacks. Potage is like a 'thicker' soup that doesn't have large bits in it, I often have it in a mug to have it slightly thicker.

I always giggle a little when I see you guys taking bets on the chocolate (bars) in these. I’m sure someone else has mentioned it but the phenomenon is called bloom. It when the tempered chis exposed to variation in temperature or humidity. The bloom can either be fat or sugar based. Typically if it’s fat based bloom the bar has a waxy or crumbly texture; the fats essentially are drawn out and separated from the cocoa and sweetener and then solidifies on the outer areas. If it’s sugar bloom then the chocolate is kind of grainy in texture. Essentially the sugar crystals absorb the moisture around the bar and expand. I’m no scientist just what I understand of it from loving to bake and make desserts.

Starters first, main dishes next, and sweets at the end. 2/ Among each category, eat flat dishes before spicy ones. Otherwise, flat dishes will be tasteless. 3/ If a dish seems too flat, try to add salt, pepper (and spices if you get) 4/ Drink a bit of water between dishes or insane mixes will happen. 5/ Do not drink sweet beverages with salty dishes. I really liked the video! It was fun to watch, even if I do not unterstand why the algorithm showed it to me... :) and I loved the German one even more. Why is there no peanut butter in any of these MRE from the rest of the world? :) Weeeeelllllll.... as daughter of a German sergeant major let me tell this little story: when I was a little kid in the 1970ies my dad had to go to one of the big Nato military manoevres and was absent for many weeks which made me very sad. The few times he was able to call us I cried my eyes out because I missed him so much. So he asked me, what he could bring me as a gift when he would return. I asked for something for my little toy shop where I used to sell very overprized stuff to my parents and my brother. He brought me at least 100 little sachets of suger, salt and pepper and stacks of little jams and jellies with greetings from his comrades. And something which was very special, because he had traded for it with some American soldiers: 3 small packages of a substance nobody had ever seen or heard of at that time and a small orange package with two chocolates filled with that stuff. Reese's. It tasted like heaven. And that my American friends was the first time I ever tasted peanut butter as a little 5-year-old in 1977. I begged my mum to buy it. But no supermarket in our area had it in stock. It was not until the 1990ies and my university days that peanut butter became a common stock in every supermarket in Germany. And I think this applies to the whole of Europe. Nowadays the vegan movement has made it somewhat popular, but most people still ignore it because it has good protein but loads of unhealthy fats and is often mixed with palm oil. And American sweets - no matter if they sport peanut butter or not - are much to sweet for most (grown up) people in the rest of the world. We are not used to so much sugar. So... sorry, it's just not for us. P.S. Müsli does NOT equal oatmeal. Müsli of any sorts - German, Swiss, French or whatever - is enjoyed best with cold milk or cold water like one of your cereals. Even orange juice could work. As long as it is cold. No wonder it was disgusting. You killed the crunchyness and reduced it to slime. :)

Hey ! For the french army and MRE, you don't have some kind of ustensil, you need to get your proper material, buy it yourself. For the heating process of the cans, you need to pop the lead a little bit for avoid the explosion and for the time you need to heat it, it's the combustion time of one fuel tablet (yes the thing that smell like fish ahah xD). Have a nice taste test ;)

My French military service was 30 years ago, but the fork, knife and spoon were all part of the soldier package along with the “gamelle”, an aluminium cover with a foldable handle for the gourd that you eat or drink in that can be used as a pan to heat your food or water over a fire. So you didn’t have to purchase the utensils yourself (and I’m pretty sure you still don’t need to), though some people preferred to use a Swiss Army knife instead if they had one.

@@yannsalmon2988 I will continue in English so that everyone can follow. You no longer have all that in the rations today, you are asked to provide your own equipment for almost everything you need for comfort. Being allergic to anything military ranging from food to music, I thought the video would bring nothing but disappointment... with a French flair. Boy was I wrong! It isn't about rations, it's actual stand-up comedy reminiscent of the three stooges. I loved it! First our numb nuts appear in chef's jackets, a hint they might know a thing or two about cooking, food, etc. After a few brief yet unfortunate comments about cheese it became obvious their attire should've been Marine fatigues. Mozzarella: Italian. Gruyère: Swiss. Then they throw away the box on which contents are listed in English, only to keep guessing at what's written on the wrappers. Hilarious. Finally they place a closed tin of duck on the fire, thus opting for the alternate use of a seemingly innocuous and delicious dish. Think military, a bit like a grenade pin but in reverse. Sealed means IED, open means dinner. That's when I paused the video, as I could see no more through the tears of laughter. These guys must be truly dangerous on a battlefield. I mean... to themselves. Ok, back to watch the end of it... if the duck IED spared the camera and crew. Part 2. If that "pâté" has the consistency of tuna, it isn't pâté but rillettes. The former is made with pork liver, whereas the latter is shredded pork meat and fat. A specialty from the region of Le Mans, West of Paris. Nope, there ain't no Marines base over there, so I didn't expect them to know the difference. Think pork liver vs. spareribs. Not quite the same thing.

Otherwise, it was really fun to see you two taste our RCIR ! You're lucky you got the chocolate muesli, the red fruits one is gross.

I think that the nougat thing you guys didn't like is a turron(e) piece. A few different countries in Europe have a version of it. Depends on what you like. I know that Spain, Italy, and France all have a version. The Spanish one is the most unique and is my favorite (almond and honey based), whereas the Italian and French ones (often) have fruit mixed in as well, I think. You should try Spanish turrόn if you like almonds!

This remark from one of the people in the video is consistent with one of the major causes of the percentage of obese people in the USA. Another one is an intestinal flora that is on average half as diverse as in Europe due to junk food. A third cause is: in the USA, over-motorized, they walk much less.

@@Odah_ Most Americans have no exposure to languages other than English outside of the two compulsory credits they take in high school, and probably 90% of them take Spanish as their language option. The majority of us will never leave our country. Hollywood, therefore, is the only resource most have for exposure to other cultures, and unfortunately, it's almost always wrong in it's representation. As a nation, we really suck at paying attention to cultures other than our own, even internally. I took French in high school and have been to France on a study abroad trip several years ago. I studied the dos and don'ts before going, but the rest of my group very clearly didn't. There's no real excuse for it except that our culture brainwashes everyone into thinking we're the best country in the world and discourages us from seeking out information that could discredit that. This ignorance and apathy is, in my opinion, one of the worst aspects of our culture.
@Odah_

@@eileenmiller4685 I've noticed that with the Spanish, any foreign culture or language that is exposed to you guys is Southern American and thus Spanish. Like the way they were trying to pronounce things on the packaging was so bad that it sounded like it was Spanish, i just didn't understand most of what they were trying to read out loud if i didn't try to decode it lmao. Also i felt like there was somewhat of an hesitation on what they had to think on the food they were going to eat, like saying "huhh" or "ew" to just food, until they ate it and it was just good and couldn't stop eating it. There's such a huge gap in food culture between our 2 continents, i feel like Americans are disgusted for not a whole lot. I was watching a livestream and a girl said she forgot to eat some icecream that must've melted in her bag, and everybody in the chat started saying "EWWW DISGUSTING WTF" to just melted icecream??

What’s amazing is that the French MRE and its content seems to have not changed at all since I did my military service 30 years ago. The “crackers” are a very poor substitute for bread which is something really difficult to do without in a meal for a French person. If I remind correctly, those crackers are best if you dip them first in the potage. Chocolate in Europe is very different from the US in taste and texture, because of different regulations. In France, it’s more often dark chocolate with a stronger flavor and much lower fats and sugar. The chocolate drink is supposed to be mixed with milk, not bland water. If I remember correctly there should have been powdered milk along the coffee, tea and cocoa bags.
