In the words of Bono from U2 by U2: " I remember waking up and my mother wasn't around. I asked 'where is she?' I was told 'something has happened with your grandfather'. Then she came back to the house and said 'Your grandfather's dead.' He went out on a high (the night of his jubilee wedding anniversary).. But she was shaken. We were all a bit shaken. And then she went off, because she was the eldest sister, she was the organizer of the family. The next time I saw her was at the graveside, watching her father being buried. And then she collapses. And I see my father carrying her. Everyone's asking, 'What's happened?' 'She fainted!' 'Oh my goodness, she fainted, your mother's fainted!" So everyone's in a bit of a shock but we all go back to number ten. We didn't really know what was going on. I suppose they were trying to keep it from the kids. And then I remember my uncle arriving at the door and wailing, just like little child. It was such a strange thing. I knew something terrible had happened. She had suffered a brain haemorrhage. She stayed alive for about four days, I think. Some powerful things happened in those few days, very powerful things. I read the Bible and I prayed to God not to let my mother die. We were brought in to say goodbye to her: my old man, Norman and me. And then they turned off whatever technology was keeping her alive. That was really extraordinary. They have a choice: they can keep you alive or they can allow you to die - the decision must have been made to allow her to die. They just came in, we all said goodbye and then they pulled a switch. I remember the doctor was very moved. The clergyman, the same Sydney Laing, was a beautiful man, very elegant and great with my dad, who didn't go to our church. And that was it. I had a feeling of the house being pulled down on me. My mother died and then there were just three men living on their own in a house. That is all it was then, it ceased being a home. It was just a house, with three men killing each other slowly, not knowing what to do with our sense of loss and just taking it out on each other. Things could get to a very, very high pitch."

Completely agree. Even back when they first started, he had poignant lyrics with this type of stuff. I Will Follow is about his mom. Also, as a 17 year recovered addict, I will tell you that hardly any song written by any artist better captured what it’s like to be in the grips of active addiction(Running to Stand Still) and the overwhelming internal tumult of trying to get clean(Bad). Just absolute next level stuff.

So hauntingly beautiful. I saw U2 for the first time this May for my 39th birthday in Las Vegas and was so close, Bono and Edge saw me, waved and nodded at me then posed for a photo. While I'm not a fan of Bono's politics, I've been a fan of their music my entire life. It was breathtaking. 🌹🌹🌹

Bono, I always appreciate your letting us be part of your life. It is a part of us too.Thank you and it makes us not just bond with you but show we can all bond with all. I feel the best is to understand all and forgive all. That is how we all go to heaven, that is the secret. Try to change the hateful, but forgive everyone as Jesus did. And as we are still alive, get as many to understand this.

Love this song Emotional, beautiful. Perfect. You can really hear the emotion in Bono's voice, because this is song about his mother (next to "Tomorrow", "Lemon", "Mofo" and "I Will Follow"). The Edge has done very beautiful and powerful thing with his falsetto. Amazing bassline, this song is just perfect
