This song is an absolute lyrical gem. The raw feeling of Bono's voice coupled with the poignancy of his and Dylan's words is just unreal. It is actually a really cool story of how this song was penned. Back in the mid 80's Bono was renting a house in California - it ended up a few years later to be the same house the Menendez family moved into - yes the same family of the famous murdered parents, killed by their sons Lyle and Eric. Anyways, Bono had a dream one night that contained many of these lyrics and he felt like it was a Bob Dylan song he was singing but couldn't think of which one -- so he ends up calling Dylan and asked him if he wrote a song containing those words and Dylan told him he had not but loved what Bono had come up with and then Bono asked him to co-write the rest of it with him. No one is exactly sure which lines were Dylan's and which one's were Bono's but in the grand scheme of things, who really cares? They both did an incredible job regardless of who put what lines in. I just think that is a really cool way to have a song come to life. - and in case anyone is wondering what Bono is screaming at the bridge - here are those words... I said love Climb up the mountain, said love I said Love All my love up here On the hill of the sun I'm on the eve of a storm And I will walk though my feet are numb I said Love rescue me Yeah I'm here without a name In the palace of my shame I said Love, rescue me Powerful stuff!

Although I know that this is a song about heroin addiction ( is what is says via comments) per the AMAZINGLY talented Dylan / Bono wrote it about. I 💜 this song/lyrics because with all music 🎶 one can interpret it anyway they wish. This song is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, & always bring a tear 😢 to my eye. The many different meanings behind these lyrics & what one can use this song to help their ❤️ & soul with is beyond words. Whether it’s an abusive relationship, alcoholism, eating disorders, etc the list goes on. This is why music 🎶, real Music like this is so loved! They don’t make them like this anymore (well hardly) ~ Thank God for the classic songs with true meaning and helpful lyrics for people!! 💯🙏🙌

I would add; This is one of those RARE SONGS, you're not supposed to listen to this, when you're happy and upbeat. This song in particular, given its old southern blues like, rythmn, and story telling lyrics, is better suited for times of Deep Self - Reflection, or As an inspirational/Motivational Anchor, to latch onto during times, of Deep, Profound Despair, & depression. It is during those times, where it can, at the very least, act as a soothing balm for troubled & weary soul. Additionally, depending how well the lyrics resonate with your life & life choices to date, it can help to pull you up out of Depression or Despair, dust you off, and set you back on either a path to redemption, or put you back on the road you traverse in this life, at this School called "Planet Earth".

I guess it is what David, known of the Psalms in the bible, uses to explain God's care for us. Rod and staff, like a shepherd (David was one before). A shepherd uses it to keep the sheep together, so they wouldn't escape. Like David is the sheep and God the shepherd. When Bono sings: "I have cursed thy rod and staff, they no longer rescue me" he probably means he hated the things which haf saved him before. Now he regrets it. Eventually, it is my interpretation.

1. You are Bono and have been a student of powerful music for some years.. 2. You are far from home (in California) traveling with your band. 3. You wake up with lots of the words in your head. 4. You consult with Bob Dylan that same day and he helps you finish the song. 5. You get your band to play the instrumentals. 10. And when you later get to Memphis, you and your band record it in oneo f Elvis' old recordings studios and voila, a masterpiece for the ages.
