So it looks like it was Edge who sings on “Desire”. I stand corrected. But as some of you have kindly pointed out, their voices do sound a lot alike.

U2 fan for 37 years, was very skeptical when I first heard about this last year, but damn. I’m really enjoying it. I’d say 90% of this is a win, 30% are truly outstanding. Beat my expectations for sure.

After the initial shock of hearing a lot of these songs for the first time, I think after a few more listens I'm going to like this new offering from U2. I've been a big fan of this band from the very beginning but I never, ever, expected to hear some of these songs done in such a mellow laid back manner. Once I got over the shock that this is definitely not a rocking album, but more of a reimagined, almost unplugged affair, I think I was able to enjoy these songs more. Great review TJR. You may have even talked me into buying the four disc version.

This is really good. It's a departure and at the same time a new chapter. It's moody, atmospheric, different and with "Pop" era vibe, yet more "natural". His voice got more mature and warm. Very curious to see/hear how the new "rockier"and guitar driven album will be like. Great review. Greetings from Athens,Greece.

A couple of thoughts... U2 has at least two more studio albums left in them. There's the long shelved or in-progress "Songs of Ascent", first started during the No Line on the Horizon sessions. And then there is a guitar/rock album that they've been working on more recently. I liked Bob Ezrin's work in the 70s...but he really botched the Jane's Addiction reunion album "Strays". And yes, it's Edge singing on "Desire".

Yes those crying that “Songs Of Surrender” is the end of this band, are just not acknowledging this fact. I suspect the primary problem with “Strays”, is that it was a victim of the loudness wars. Thanks for the comment. PS yes, I have since discovered that it was the Edge on Desire. I still think it’s the wrong vocal approach though.
@jeffsaddiction

@@TJRtheOriginal That was certainly a part of it. Additionally, Ezrin is on record during that time for having said that he didn't like Ritual De Lo Habitual...which makes me think that maybe he didn't understand the band. As well, this was the band's second chance...they wanted to cash in by being a big rock band and not the alternative/art rock band they had been during their original incarnation. So the songs were approached differently; shorter, more streamlined and accessible. The absence of Eric Avery (co-founder, co-songwriter, and original bassist) did not help.

I got the 1 cd version, for that version, overall, they chose songs that succeed in their new form. I find that the 4 cd's are a bit too much, I would never listen to those. Best option is to download the 40 songs, pick and choose, and I find about 20 of those are very worthwhile.

Hmmm, I'm really having a hard time finding any redeeming value to this release. 1st off, this is really an Edge lockdown project with Bono singing about half the tracks. Adam contributed prerecorded bass lines to a few tracks, I don't believe Larry plays on it at all. I love the idea of re-imaging the tracks, but none of these tracks transform the songs better or equal to the originals, like say their re-imaging of "Don't Really Know What I'm Looking For" on the Desire LP. Most of the tracks are really boring and just suck all of the life and passion out of the originals. Save for a few tracks that are mildly interesting, like Beautiful Day, Stay and Until the End, these are nothing more then a lockdown project that could and should have just been uploaded to KZitem as a one off curiosity.
