Steve what did I tell ya? I told you in your older videos that UAD is going native the moment they’ve lunched the Volt. Why? Cause people are starting to realize that there is no need for real time effects when you’re computer is 10x more powerful and more useful than a UAD interface with its old outdate SHARC Chips especially with computers today. Motu Ultralite MK5, RME UCX ii, Audient ID44 > Any UAD interface.

Right on mate! It’s certainly true that in post production - you could leverage your native cpu power ... however, once you start getting into the 70+ track count range - with vst etc Then you try to track and monitor in real-time with the native cpu.. you’re gonna hit a ceiling.. especially considering As computers get more capable, developers soak up that power with more complicated and detailed models and algos- so - it’s great for today because it’s like running ps2 software on ps4. But eventually - the capability of the ps4 is maxed out. I don’t necessarily disagree. I just think it’s slightly more nuanced. But you totally called it on the native. Great point!

Yes, it's the development of Apple's M1 that probably further encouraged UA to go native. These new computers can handle the UA plugins, which are the best, compared to other computers shipped within the past years. I own 2 Apollos and they still have great use. As you mentioned, Unison is one advantage. Apollos are top-of-the-line recording interfaces and mine will give me professional service for years and years to come. Also, I will not be totally using M1 for a few years. My powerful Intel iMac will be my primary recording computer for many more years. My Apollos will supplement my Intel iMac and my arsenal "old school" UA plugins.
@TheSteveKinney

This is the way for sure..... I really think Apollo's/DSP accelerated are the way to go - even if the m1's are super fast now, it's only a matter of time before the extra processing power is soaked up by more complicated and detailed models of hardware... and then we're right back to square one. Wouldn't trade the realtime monitoring/processing for nothing - but it certainly is nice to get a little extra power and the OPTION of offloading to native. super cool... and again, no one even really talks about the synths. The included synths are worth the price of admission alone. Great comment! Cheers mate!

Can u print a track with a uadx plugin, say the Pultec EQ? Or is it daw specific?
@chrispanetta9885

from what I have been told, recording in the unison slots vs recording the signal clean does make a difference in terms of the resulting sound. I never tested that theory personally but it is certainly claimed that this is a benefit of recording through a uad apollo system. As far focusrite interfaces, I have a scarlett, although it is excellent for the price point in terms of sound quality, it is nowhere near apollos. The UAD headphone jacks provide a more detailed sound and the microphone preamps are much better. Also, I use a solo and two satelites, so even when I use only a compressor going in, in my case it delivers better results. I wouldn't trade my apollo and satelites even when spark is available. I established a workflow and know exactly what my capabilities are with a solo, a quad and an octo, which is sufficient for dsp in the genre I work in. two satelites and a solo is quite convenient to travel with if ever I need to do so. That being said going in the box tracking vocals with 3-5 db gain reduction, put me right where I need to be dynamics wise. For my performance, there is no guesswork. I know immediately if my take could have been better and dont need to do post and adjustments to be certain if I am better off doing another take. I also hear exactly how I sound while tracking thus my tone etc is simply better when recording with compression and no latency. That simple 15 to 30 seconds every take and reverifying then adjusting compression parameters just takes time that is enough to reduce efficiency while recording. With just 3-5 of gain reduction on a tube tech compressor, with a tlm 102 gives me a beautiful tone that is warm and focused enough as it, where I can do fader riding and slight volume adjustments or add another set of compressors if I feel it is called for later on in the mix process. But I am starting at a solid and consistent baseline that is clean, not overly compressed nor saturated to a point I am at a point of no return. I love that spark is available, for me personally there is no use. I prefer paying 150 per plug in, own them and know I have access to them no matter what. This is great news for new uad users as you mentionned. I still recommend that anyone who is evolving in their music careers to budget for a uad system and dsp tools. The quality is incredible and while stock daw plugins and waves offer great products, the uad equivaltents to me just sound richer and sound just right.

Steve, I'm already heavily immersed in the whole UA world: Apollos, satellites, UAD plugins, and I use LUNA exclusively. The only advantage to this I see for me is that I can run LUNA without turning on my Apollos and do some mixing down. So, I may not need the DSP, but won't it tax the shit out of my CPU , or are these plugins so efficient that I don't have to worry about it? What is the advantage of using plugins natively, as opposed to those powered by the DSP in my Apollos and satellites? By the way, you do a great job!
@TheSteveKinney
2 жыл бұрын
In you're situation, I think you hit the nail on the head.. I mean - you're not at all limited by DSP availability in almost any capacity. So - you're real functional benefit would be the ability to travel and mix. Which - is cool, I mean there's plenty of times where I'd love to just sit on the couch and fool around with a mix. ha or - if I'm out somewhere and I need to bounce something down for some reason. but outside of that - the only benefit really would be the synths. They rock. Plugins being effecient natively isn't really a major point IMO, because you can always just drag the latency sample Buffer back, (it's mix down Right?) Long story short - being super heavily invested with enough DSP for days - you're largely gonna gain from the cool new synths, but that's about it... that is to say until they make the service work both ways, so everyone gets access to UAD-2 or Native licenses for the monthly fee. Long story short - it seems like UA is in a weird growing pain phase. Cheers mate!

Great video. However the point of the UADx / Spark line is was released to be the companion for the volt line of interfaces. With volt you couldn’t use your DSP driven plugins because volt wasn’t made for that Volt was made for musicians, podcasters and new smaller producers. UAD spark and volt was meant for a different customer at a different price point spark also meets another need of Apollo users because of its crazy deep integration with Luna. The mics were released to meet the needs of both customer segments. The reality is that the Apollo line was NEVER meant for super small consumers. They launched it for serious professionals. That funded the launch of the volt and spark lines. The first step towards this was the Apollo solo. They’ve been trying to slowly implement tools for everyone. But most people aren’t paying attention to that lol.

Spark is all good news to everyone, whether they own a UAD-interface or not. It makes some great plugins available for non-UAD users. And existing UAD-users gets the native version of UAD-plugins they own included in Spark for free. My few caveats are the pricing, the amount of plugins included and the fact that they still are sill running on the Apple-Silicon via Rosetta. I also hate the fact that Opal can't be bought outside of Spark, seems like a great synth. I already own most of the plugins included in Spark, so I just got some great native plugins for free. But I would really like that synth but I can't justify paying 20 bucks for one plugin and a single synth. Still, they have said that the amount of plugins in Spark will grow in time and proper Apple Silicon support is coming - so all this is a moving target. It's a good starting move from UAD, and with a new Mac Studio on my desk I couldn't be happier. Good video, Steve. Nice to see your face again!
@TheSteveKinney
2 жыл бұрын
Super fair points! I agree largely. If I had to guess, this is one big experiment for UA, and they will likely adjust to what they find their clients/customers to want. So if this whole thing kind of flops, they will probably re-think the strategy or make synths like opal available as standalone. At least one would think. Ultimately - it's way more expensive to buy the plugins outright. I mean - in the last year I've spent probably $2k on licenses and bundles, which would be like 10 years or so of year subscriptions... I can guarantee you that in 10 years - I probably won't be using the current UA plugs that I bought - because there will be either better newer models from them, or something crazy cool.. or I get lucky and manage to snag a real hardware unit of something etc. So it's not a bad deal - it's just weird for UA users who have been cool with/conditioned to pay outright for software. So the whole thing kind of puts everyone in a weird growing pain spot. Once more plugs are added - I see it taking off. Especially with the young audience who still haven't gotten apollos yet. Great to hear from ya mate! Hope you're well! -Steve

You can't change the impedance of a microphone with a native plugin but you will get everything else such as saturation and character because that is all done digitally. I think many people will find that lowering the impedance on a microphone made in the last 40 years will actually make it sound worse. High impedances microphone preamps of 2 kilo-ohms (2000 ohms) or higher will give a modern mic the best results, artificially lowering the impedance is always detrimental to the quality audio. This is why console manufacturers through out the 1980s & 1990s were striving to get microphone preamps to the 2000 ohms as a standard. SSL's famous E 4000 series consoles were world famous but the vast majority of those consoles were sold without mic preamps simply because engineers at the time thought they sounded terrible. The SSL E consoles had an impedance of 1000 ohms which was not very impressive compared to the other consoles on the market from MCI, Sony, Neve, Midas & others. It wasn't until the SSL J/K 9000 consoles came out in the 90s that SSLs mic preamps began to be used. The Apollo interfaces have a stock impedance of 5000 ohms for Gen 1 and 5300 ohms for Gen 2/3. This is excellent for 99% of microphones in most studios, the best way to hear how Unison's impedance effects a microphone is to record a dynamic microphone, flat, with NO EQ on a voiceover and use the 610-b plugin which has an impedance switch on it. Use 500 ohms, then 2000 ohms and another without a unison plugin in the first slot. Then take those files and gain match them in your DAW to hear the difference. What you should hear is the lower the impedance the less detail you will hear and the higher the impedance the more open the sound will become. Impedance is important for microphone quality and higher impedance give you a better signal to noise ratio as well as better CMR (common mode rejection ratio). Lower impedances such as the older Neve designs are a major reason people associate them with a quote "warm sound", the class A mic amp and Neve transformers add to the sonic character but impedance has as much of an impact on sound as the other more talked about parts like the famous transformers. So test unison's impedance and I think you will have fun learning about it as well as hearing how impedance is a huge factor in a mic preamps sound.

I just finished my testing last night and plan on uploading today. I took a different approach, I would love your feedback on the video. Thinking about your approach to the test - kind of has me puzzled, I don’t think I’m understanding. Recording the mic - flat - with no unison or plugins on in console, which would presumably have the standard impedance of the Apollo.. then in post add the plugin module and play with the impedance control.. Well, you’re not actually changing impedance, so what would it be doing? Just applying a simulated eq curve? Or ir? .. you can’t change impedance of a wav file, so. I mean - if you’re just kind of curious to learn the general “tone” idea behind impedance .. I’m not sure how this really would compare unison vs native. I could be dead wrong. I even clarify in my video that I was wrong about something. 😂 I’m not like most youtubers who claim to be knowledge gods ha

@@TheSteveKinney For the Unison to truly change the impedance you would have to add the 610-b in the unison slot of the UA console or the impedance from the Apollo will stay the same at 5/5.3 kilo-ohms. You can not change the impedance later, it's impossible because it is an analog domain setting. But it the plugin could simulate the electrical changes digitally but that isn't the same to change it in post would be just tone shaping a signal that was recorded at 5/5.3 kilo-ohms and not actually changing the impedance to 500 ohms or 2000 ohms. The impedance has to be switched at the recording stage, otherwise it has no affect on the actual impedance and only has an effect on tone as a digital emulation. it may sound different but you are not effecting the actual analog circuit if you switch the impedance on the 610-b plugin in post. So the resistance isn't actually changed only emulated. UAD use a software called Matlab to create their plugins and Matlab lets you create digital simulations of analog hardware which allows them to emulate the tone of an impedance switch in post but it won't have the same effect on the track as it does at the recording stage. So if you try to do it in post the things like transient smearing as well as loss of top end or low end will only be simulated, the results could be similar but it would not be the same. So I would do both to see the differences it makes. Use the 610-B on the way in and in post. Because if you only do it in post you are just adding digital emulation impedance to a 5/5.3 kilo-ohm signal. I know it's confusing, but honestly I've been doing this for over 25 years and the rule of thumb was always higher impedance is good for modern mics, since they are designed for modern mic preamps. But there are always exceptions to every rule in audio. Also another thing if the microphone requires phantom power 48v then that changes the whole thing, and impedance will be dictated more by the microphone itself than the mic preamp, this is why I suggested using a dynamic mic, since the mic pre amp will dictate the impedance and not the other way around. i'm no rocket scientist either but I have always been vocal about how impedance is just as important to a pre amps character at the other most famous things us audio nerds discuss such as tubes, transformers and so on. But to really hear what impedance is doing you will have to switch the impedance in the analog domain or it isn't changing the actual impedance of the signal.

A lot of audio engineers really love making kind a “speed mixing” and speak a lot about it, but NON of them NEVER follow this tactic in their video. Sooooo many words…. But anyway good video and thanks for that

Hey Vadim, my apologies - but I’m misunderstanding what you’re referring to. I really feel you may have a cool point, and I’d love to understand further - but can you clarify speed mixing? Cheers mate!

Just dropped 500 hundred on UA pluckins..lol and I find this the next day..lol..just fuming 😡 ..the exact same pluckins in spark 😡😡

I mean. I wouldn’t. Because now you have a perpetual license to the native versions. Which is better than monthly crap. And it all sounds good. But. The initial shock is a roller coaster no doubt! Cheers bro!

I have an Apolo solo, If I choose to pay for spark instead of buying each plug-in I need. Will I be able to open it up in console like I usually do with my preamp & compression when recording ?

Negative good sir. Unfortunately. Purchasing the plugin is a license for DSP, which grants you a license for the native version. But not the other way around. Cheers!

They better be the same or in the long run UAD plugins will not sell like Plugin alliance etc… Not too mention there much better interfaces then UAD- sorry UAD until you make clocking superior- lynx and antelope audio better and AA for much less money over yours now the lynx is expensive like UAD but with lynx you get much better sounding interface imo.

Plugins will always sell. Always. People have the belief that it’s better than hardware. It’s not. Never was intended to be. It’s about convenience. The rubicon is that it sounds close enough and is convenient enough that it outweighs the cost of uses analogue gear. Subscriptions will eventually hurt all the company’s that offer them. I see it as being something that eventually will go away. I get why it’s here and why it’s advantageous for people in the “now” but business will eventually change and evolve. As far as interfaces, lynx is up there for sure as far as AD/DA - I can’t argue that. Antelope, however is just too buggy. They stopped being carried by SW. there’s a reason for that ... Anyways. Appreciate the perspective - it doesn’t matter the interface. Everything we all have is better than the Beatles had .. we all have no excuses. Use the interface and tools that make you feel creative and write the best songs and arrangements! Cheers mate!

@@TheSteveKinney My bad I did not follow your channel if everything you say is true here then you’re right and I am with you but stupid I am not and I don’t agree with you about UAD being the best for tracking and antelope Audio is not buggy only thing been buggy about Antelope Audio is there Mic emulations plugin but their interfaces are superior to UAD because of the clocking Antelope Audio used to be a top clocking company before they converted into the AA company. Its great to hear your anti-subscription. Proud of you. Keep it up.
