Ubi Caritas by Maurice Duruflé. Areté Singers, Irene Cheng, Conductor. From Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens, (Four motets on Gregorian themes), Op. 10
Ubi Caritas has been sung as plainsong (single melody) since the 800s in liturgical settings. In 1960, Duruflé set verse 1 into a mixed-voice polyphonic choral piece that changes keys twice before returning to the original. The subtle yet complex harmonies make this ancient prayer richer by allowing the listener to experience a fuller range of emotive responses. Join us in contemplating the refrain: Where charity and love are, God is there. Ubi Caritas is renowned for its exquisite musical beauty. It features lush harmonies, rich choral textures, and expressive melodies that create a profound and serene atmosphere. The piece showcases Duruflé's mastery of choral writing and his ability to evoke deep emotional and spiritual responses through music. Ubi Caritas is often performed during the liturgical service, particularly during the Maundy Thursday Mass and other occasions that celebrate the themes of love and unity. Overall, Duruflé's Ubi Caritas is significant for its musical beauty, liturgical use, and lasting impact on the choral repertoire. Its enduring popularity and profound emotional impact make it a cherished work within the choral music tradition.
Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Congregávit nos in unum Christi amor.
Exsultémus et in ipso iucundémur.
Timeámus et amémus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligámus nos sincéro.
Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Simul ergo cum in unum congregámur:
Ne nos mente dividámur, caveámus.
Cessent iúrgia malígna, cessent lites.
Et in médio nostri sit Christus Deus.
Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Simul quoque cum beátis videámus
Gloriánter vultum tuum, Christe Deus:
Gáudium, quod est imménsum atque probum.
Sæcula per infiníta sæculórum. Amen.
Traditional Gregorian Chant
Where charity and love are, there God is.
The love of Christ has gathered us into one flock.
Let us exult, and in Him be joyful.
Let us fear and let us love the living God.
And from a sincere heart let us love each other (and Him).
Where charity and love are, there God is.
Therefore, whensoever we are gathered as one:
Lest we in mind be divided, let us beware.
Let cease malicious quarrels, let strife give way.
And in the midst of us be Christ our God.
Where charity and love are, there God is.
Together also with the blessed may we see,
Gloriously, Thy countenance, O Christ our God:
A joy which is immense, and also approved:
Through infinite ages of ages. Amen.
