Wow I was waiting fir the Valkyries to show up and put the boat on a combat patrol immediately.Ahead of its time is the biggest understatement of all time so to speak.I was on American fast attack submarines for years as a navigator and an plankowner on a brand new boat many moons ago and you can see where this type xxi is the grandfather OF ALL MODERN BOATS.

The Germans were, are and forever will be The Masters of Steel and all its applications! So much of their technology is in use today; in subs, aircraft, spacecraft etc, so much so that we take it for granted. Much respect and love from all the people around the world not polluted and blinded by post WWII propaganda.

the obvious engineering changes from the former class to this completely "New" redesign at the end of the war is more then obvious! The craft that went into these undersee ships and the transformation towards the stealth on the outer design to the more sleek function of interior and vastly advanced technology is incredible....so far advanced!

the original war class had door faults..they sank with loss of crews..but they hauled em up..rebuilt em...had it not been for the encryption breaking..they would have held the high ground..but for design...they were ahead for the most....like anything....like law..a law is only a true law unless its tested....there were indeed flaws.how else are we as a human pushing machines to the limits to know but its use through function.........over all silhouettes of subs still retain the forties late design....like the Horton bomber......the design was not faulted!!
@chazt8604

The Type XXI were not advanced really they had massive faults in design and construction. Speer went for sectional construction in non shipbuiling companys to speed construction. When they were brought to the yards though sections would be different diameters, sometimes by several inches. Ultimately they took longer to build with the supposed quick method than if they had been built by traditional methods. Over 100 were commisioned but only two did a single war patrol each, construction started in 1943 - that says a lot about how seaworthy they really were. So what advanced tech did they have, what set them apart from other subs of the day - just the exterior hull shape really, very little was of interest past some trials post war when they were inspected in detail, while they did have major design flaws.

Hans Hrothgar oh dear such a polite informed person, you did actually read what I wrote my dear little chap? Did any of it sink in? The idea was good (although some of them, like having large battery life and a higher underwater speed than above water had already been done on production subs in the UK) but the implementation of those ideas in the Type XXI was a fail really, which is why of over 100 commissioned in the 2 years of construction only two did a single war patrol. The Type XXIII electroboot was built in far lesser numbers, had a shorter range, only 2 torpedos, yet did more war patrols and actually sunk ships while being in construction for less time. There were massive faults with the Type XXI to do with its design, equipment selection - which had little to do with the war itself (except the germans had more knowledge for the design and construction of the Type XXI's than they had earlier in the war), the actual construction method was an attempt to speed up construction but failed and led to longer construction times instead. Political idiocy prevented Speer admitting that and going back to traditional methods.

Very advanced design, but the mass production that the germans tried to use to make them failed. Hull sections were to be built inland, then assembled in drydock and welded together. A great concept by it did not work. Only two were produced, and they required massive rebuilding. You cannot build advanced submarines like Liberty Ships (freighters)
