For the first time in Europe, parabolic flights for scientific purposes were conducted with gliders at UCLouvain, in partnership with the Aéroclub Universitaire de Louvain (ACUL). During these flights, one reproduces for a few seconds the conditions met in space where there is no gravity, also known as 'zero-g’. The set-up was lead by researchers from the group of Prof. Philippe Chatelain at the Institute of Mechanics, Materials, and Civil Engineering (iMMC). They worked in close collaboration with Dr. Vladimir Pleaser (graduated UCLouvain 1979), a European expert in micro-gravity and author of the book ‘Gravity, Weight and their Absence'.
During a glider flight, 10 to 15 parabolas can be flown and each of them offers five to six seconds of micro-gravity for conducting a short experiment.
The experiments lead in such conditions are meant for the university students to better understand the physical phenomena that can be highlighted in weightlessness.
