It is an important transportation hub where Fuyo Kaido, the main road on the north bank of the Yoshino River, intersects with the road to Sanuki, and since it faces the Yoshino River, it is also in a suitable location for boat transportation.
This townscape was established as a castle town of Wakijou and developed as a distribution center for indigo. Currently, there are 85 traditional buildings from the mid-Edo to early Showa eras, mainly from the Meiji era, and the landscape of the early modern and modern eras remains intact.
A major feature of this townscape is that there are many ``Udatsu'' roofs with real tiles and plastered on both ends of the townhouses, which is why it is popularly known as ``Udatsu Townscape.''
Udatsu (Uken)
``This is a private house from the Edo period, with wing walls with small roofs that jut out in the shape of a ``rabbit'' on both sides of the building.
Some are placed at the border of each house in a row house, serving both as decoration and as fire protection. ” (Kojien 6th edition)
Initially, they were built for fire prevention purposes, but as they were expensive to install, they became more important as decorations, and gradually became symbols of wealth and success.
