Wow! My fave part of the interview- his description of what kind of man he wants to be. “what kind of man do you want to be, “I want to be a man that can overcome his weaknesses, vices and imperfections, a man who is not a slave to his passions and desires but, a real man who is in control of himself.” A powerful guy- is able to say no to a vice. I’d like to be a powerful guy who can control his emotions and vices. Amen!

I've had the honor of designing for Bas in recent years. His FB cover, KZitem channel art and his Big DVD's of Combat are all my work and I can tell you that working with him and his wife has always been a good experience. He might have a (well deserved) reputation for his fighting skills but, they're also really nice people and very easy to work with. Truly an honor to have been recommended and chosen to handle his branding.

My favorite martial artist. The story of when he gets anxious nerves before a fight, he talks in 3rd person to himself to calm himself down, that method I still use today and I heard that years ago on youtube video.

I used to scream "fuck it" and slap myself lol. I think trying to convince myself I didn't care what happened "fuck it" just get out there and get hurt "Fuck It!" Go out there and hurt someone else. I've only been asked about it a few times. I always laugh thinking what it must be like hearing some dude in the lockeroom / bathroom screaming FUCK IT followed by slapping noises. I TRIED not to do it but, I don't think I ever didn't do it when I had a real match.

@@Tazmanian_mma that's what most people say is the attitude to have, whatever gets you to walk out there and get in the ring, more power to ya homie. Enjoy the ride while it lasts, when it's gone, you'll long for it every day. Listen to your body and get second opinions on injuries, hard lessons learned from a retired now disabled fighter. Not that you asked, or that you don't already know, I just don't want anyone to end up like me. Good luck to ya

I don’t have many friends. After I got injured my military friends disappeared and that had been my life for a decade. Between transitioning to civilian life and learning to live with my disabilities I began self isolating more and more. Mr. Rutten seems like he would be a cool guy to go hang with on a fishing trip. I don’t know if he even likes to fish… I would just really like to know what he is like outside of a fighting style atmosphere. I’ve tried to power through my pain before and just haven’t been able to find a happy median, I’m so sick of always hurting and all the medications that help with a portion of the pain. I’m really glad I learned who Bas Rutten is. I’ve watched d his old matches and even watched the tv show he was on with kevan James but his smile he has when he talks about being the bully beater made me happy to see. Actually he smiled anytime he spoke about fighting….. I would like to know if he is still a bird lover and if he has any as pets?

We also made nunchucks (we called them moon-shacks) and spent alot of time up trees or down cliffs. Danger was non existent to us. Nice to hear story's of youth like that. These days its spent on here or they don't want to go holidays unless there's WiFi. Genuinely a really nice guy. 👍. Good pod.✌

To this day, PRIDE is still my all-time favorite fighting promotion1 We will never again see such epic awesomeness in combat sports.*

Situation awareness, distance, rhythm which is opportunity, and endurance which is controlling your stress (anxiety) and breathing.

The spinning back kick really touched home with me. Because as a 16 year old teen, I actually used a very well placed spinning back kick. It was against a larger twenty something year old man. It put him on the ground. I basically stood there in shock that it had knocked him down. That guy then ran away. That was over 43 years ago. 😁 it was like one of those fictional scenes in a movie. That never happened in a real fight. So that guy had probably never been in a real fight.
