What could the coach, the team, or the school do to prevent this in the first place? Use magical powers to put a forcefield in front of the ref? The suspension of the entire team was not a good call. No one other than the football player should be punished.

When I was in junior high, any student who participated in any extracurricular activity, even band or science fair, had to take a slip around to every teacher, and their parents every Monday, and turn it in to their coach or band teacher, etc. It evaluated the student for: citizenship, i.e. bullying, treating everyone with dignity honor and respect, etc.; Academic Participation, did you raise your hand in class, and participate in discussions; and, Academic Progress, were you turning in the homework and doing required readings. And did you have C or better? Any citizenship dings, or any dings from your parents, and you were ineligible for competition that week. A total of three dings, and you were ineligible for the week. The coaches and administration were very serious about it. And the coaches would punish you with extra exercises, and give you readings on citizenship and manners with written tests if you got a citizenship ding. That school District was the only one I ever made the honor role. I was that really bright kid who aced every quiz or test without ever doing the homework. So, I generally got a C or a B, in al my classes. the first time I got dinged for academic progress, I had to go to a mandatory study hall before and after school, taught by the vice principal. He had the weekly course syllabus for every class in the school. He knew exactly what you were suppose to be reading and what homework you were supposed to turn in. and, he made sure I did all of it, and he would take it from me and turn it in. Consequently I made very good academic progress and had a 3.9-gpa. I was short one shop project one semester. We were supposed to build a project tote, 10X14X8-inches to keep our projects in our lockers when we weren’t in the shop. Everybody else mad very simple joints and whipped theirs out. I mad mine with dovetailed corners, and a sliding dovetailed bottom. Far more durable and elegant, but also far more time consuming.

I come from Texas. Born and raised here. Sports players get a pass on everything. We have multiple $100 million dollar high school football fields all over the state. We don’t spend our taxes on education. We spend it on sports. It’s big money. So the players get away with pretty much everything. If this kid hadn’t done this on the field with so many people filming, if he had attacked the guy in the parking lot, he would have walked.

It's about the INDIVIDUAL and NOT the sport that someone plays. He should have been charged and jailed. Taken out of all sports. For the SAFETY of those who participate in sports and those who officiate. It's that ONE kid that IS THE PROBLEM. ruined all of the other kids. This is WRONG. Punish the criminal NOT those who DIDNT commit a crime.

"Faron Ray" ...how do you know the people responsible for ANY and ALL issues like this, are not just as guilty for failing to do their jobs? It is the responsibility of ALL the leaders and teachers in this school to teach ALL students HOW TO CONDUCT THEMSELVES. Yes, this is ONE student, BUT, he has had previous run-ins WHICH THE LEADERSHIP DID NOT ADDRESS ....HENCE PUTTING THE WHOLE SCHOOL IN A VERY BAD LIGHT. This level of "punishment", as you put it, WILL HAVE SOME MEANING TO EVERYONE ELSE AT THIS SCHOOL ....unlike the typical "sugar-coating" that now takes place throughout society when people break the law .....as is so common-place in today's society.

Punish all teams because every coach is responsible for conduct of all students. He attacked a ref at a soccer game and now football! Wow, he had two priors and they let him go to another sporting event? I mean using her logic, he can play baseball because he has yet to assault an umpire? Assaulting an official or coach is a huge red flag. He has serious anger issues and the school chose to do nothing about that. I am a teacher (20+ years) and a former official for 18 years. Now he is facing potentially serious legal issues and the school could have done some preventive counseling.
