What's the reasoning behind not allowing asylum seekers to work? Surely that would save the government money as they wouldn't have to pay them a weekly salary instead (which as it is, is a ridiculously small amount of money to live off)
@jenjones90
3 жыл бұрын
Maybe because of the risk? No one who seeks asylum has a checkable criminal history. A lot of asylum seekers are economic migrants, who paid an agent to enter the UK cause they didn't qualify for a visa/tourist visa, perhaps due to having a criminal record. They then enter the UK with no documents. So maybe part of the reason why not all asylum seekers are allowed to work is to lower the risk? Because statistically a certain number of them will have a criminal background but could be applying for jobs in schools, care homes etc. Whilst it perhaps makes no difference if they eventually get granted asylum and get to work, by that point they will be in the UK a while and will at least, hopefully, have a clean record for that period of time, which counts as some sort of checkable history. And FYI, I am a migrant. I had to go through a rigorous application process on the points system to be able to work here. I don't think anyone in the UK has a an issue with people coming to work and filling shortages, or genuine asylum seekers facing persecution being granted refuge. But, not all people seeking asylum are asylum seekers...hence why the vast majority are men. And they make the system tougher for everyone who is genuine. Not being able to work immediately helps to deter more non-genuine asylum seekers. As a mother, I wouldn't feel comfortable if for eg someone without any checkable history was just allowed to work in a school, or in a hospital. This will always be the case to a certain extent with an asylum system, but at least the risk is lowered by not giving people the right to work until they're granted asylum. And also...as the guy pointed out in this video, why would anyone bother applying for a work visa if you can just enter illegally and be given the right to work straight away?
@neanda

This video loves to omit a lot of facts. In 2020, there were ~36000 (a dip from COVID) people who claimed asylum in the UK of which ~8400 arrived by boat (AKA 23.4%). This year, 30,000 people will arrive by boat! All coming from the safe country of France! Totally unsustainable. The infrastructure to handle these people, the schools, medical attention, foreign language education, assimilation programs, it all adds up. It's very easy to say we need to take care of everyone but that's a naive and simplistic rationale to possess.

The people complaining would simply have no argument if this country was providing a system for unhappy/unsuccessful citizens to relocate to another country, but they don't. For us to realistically relocate, we need visa, language lessons, thousands of pounds in savings and warm relations with feasible nations worth migrating to. Currently we have unaffordable cost of living, a complete breakdown of social public services, overly inflated taxation, a radically declining GPB real value, so much regulation you can't start a business to finance your relocation and a Government who have upset most the world and who continually print money to embezzle tax payers funds for financing defence corporations through a war which could be deescalated if the greed for land and mineral resources ended. I think migrants are welcome to this place, but give me the opportunity to leave!!
