The UK’s new home secretary, Suella Braverman, said it's her “dream” and “obsession” to see a plane take asylum seekers to Rwanda before Christmas, during a speech at the governing Conservative Party's annual conference.
The British government planned a similar deportation flight of asylum seekers to Rwanda in June, but the move was blocked by an injunction from the European Court of Human Rights.
Braverman wants a blanket ban on anyone entering the UK through unauthorised means, and said she does not expect any planes to take off until after Christmas, because of ongoing legal challenges to deportations.
Tim Naor Hilton, chief executive of the group Refugee Action, said sending migrants to Rwanda would be “a blatant breach of the international refugee laws that the UK proudly helped create in the first place”.
