Five people from an organised gang, all from Bulgaria, have been found guilty of committing what the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) describes as the biggest case of benefit fraud in England and Wales.
Over four and a half years, the three women and two men made numerous fake claims for Universal Credit, stealing over £50 million altogether. They admitted their crimes in court and also confessed to money laundering.
The gang used real or stolen identities to make the fraudulent claims, supported by fake documents like phony rental agreements, fake payslips, and forged letters from landlords, employers, and doctors.
When their claims were rejected, they kept trying until they succeeded. The investigation found three places in Wood Green, North London, acting as "benefit factories," where they processed the false claims which helped people get a National Insurance number and the benefits they were entitled to, but were actually fronts for fraud.
