I love this for the acoustic guitar at the front, the close-harmony vocals, and the sheer passion of the big, final, melancholic melody at 7’08”. I noticed Rick Beato picked up on that last point in his Top 20 Guitar Solo Outros • TOP 20 GUITAR SOLO OUT... where this is #17.
Anyone who wants to know a bit more about U.K.’s Debut Album could do a lot worse than trying The Music Aficionado website musicaficionado.blog/2019/03/... where the author writes accurate and intelligent 'Quality articles about the golden age of music'.
In the article there, Allan Holdsworth claims "I had never played a completely overdubbed solo until I recorded with Bill Bruford a few years later. It’s so weird, so sterile. You know you feel like you’re outside. When a band plays together, everybody interacts. And that feels much better to me. If you make mistakes, they don’t feel so goofy as when you overdub and foul it up. It’s hard sometimes because I can get a mental block". I totally agree, which is why we tracked live. Allan was, however, perenially unhappy with his contribution and would frequently ask to scrap it and start again by overdubbing over what others had recorded. I'm happy to report that the big end melody on 'Nevermore', starting around 7'08", was tracked live - all at once and at the same time - and kept as is. #billbrufordsearthworks
