The shape at 6:11 appears to be a rotor from an enigma machine. Thanks to Wafflemaster135 & Kirk Northrop for figuring that out!!! This video was a mad race against the clock to find the note on release day, get home, film, edit and upload! I somehow managed it, although slightly later than I normally upload. Since I didn't have a lot of time, instead of the usual blinking banknote, there's a winking banknote - can you spot it?!

@@Cambutalgirl Daniel is right, it was kept a secret because the Brits did not want to give away the intel. While Turing was the master mind, he was part of a team. Cracking the enigma was not a one man operation, as such the decision to keep the work a secret was not related to one man. I am historian, and the Bletchley story actually upset some people because there was always some mystique around knowing where the Germans were going to strike. There was a sense of divine intervention or special military prowess around The Second World War, a "Right makes Might," type of perspective. After the intelligence was released it was more, "oh they knew because they cracked the codes." Believe, me it did add a whole new element into the studies of The Second World War. Many people felt it undermined the sacrifices made in the field. I disagree with that, defeating the Nazis took a combination of intellect and grit from people of many nations. That said, what happened to Turing afterward is unforgivable, and I wish he and the others could have been appreciated in their time.

Reasons today is a good day: Sweden won Group E in the Euro 2020. I finished an essay that was 2½ months late and am now done with every course in school for this year. The very recent government crisis in my country might not be as big as it was percieved to be. I will now be able to buy some flags tomorrow. But most importantly, Half Asleep Chris posts another video about banknotes! :-D

There also seems to be a diagram of a Turing machine in 3:14 , which is one of the most important contributions of Alan Turing to computer science. It is a mathematical model of a basic computer. Any system that can simulate a Turing machine is said to be Turing-complete and therefore is theoretically capable of computing anything computers can compute.

It is a diagram of a Turing machine. The 'ticker tape' at 2:39 is also a reference to Turing machines, it's the tape that represents the machine's memory.

One of the first video games (If not the first) was programmed for a smaller version of the ACE. A game of draughts by Chris Strachey, who went to Cambridge with Turing. It ran poorly and later Strachey asked Turing for the manual for the Manchester Mk1 which was a much better computer by memory which he gave him and allowed him to run the game successfully. So Turing has a huge connection to video games.

as lgbt youth , it’s incredibly sad to hear what the uk did to turing. he is an incredibly important person to our history and possibly the entire world , yet they did such an awful thing to him. i’m glad they can acknowledge him , but it’s still an injustice that they refuse to do anythin about him and his legacy. especially the injustice that people like me face, where we are slowly losing our rights in the uk. either way, he deserves this. a hero in his time and still today. a personal inspiration

You make a great point! The "treatment" Turing was forced to undergo was to skew his hormone balance - basically, they were artificially inducing a form of gender dysphoria in him and it made him suicidal much in the way many trans people suffer from gender dysphoria. Difference is: In Turing's case the government was forcing a "treatment" on him, in the case of trans people in the UK and all over the world, governments and insurances are *withholding* necessary treament from trans people. Puberty blockers at a young age and a correct hormone regimen are lifesavers, but they are demonised in the media. This is an injustice!

@Robert Stallard S If you want any credability for your very uncredible statement then you need to show your sources. I have tried for the last half hour to find a source proving your comment and i found nothing. If you dont show sources then you will look like a homophobe making up stories to tarnish the reputation of a hero.
@davidbrydon3124

@Robert Stallard Jhon Big has a point. I too went looking for source material for your accusations and only found references to Hodges book. That's quite suspicious, especially given that people like you are now using it to imply that Turing was a pedophile. You need to apply a bit of critical thinking to what you read (maybe Hodges sources had ulterior motives?), otherwise you're the one that's an embarrassment.
