Served in PNG with SIL at Ukarumpa from 1973-1977. Brought back many wonderful memories. Beautiful country and people. Saw the Queen in Goroka in 1975 during PNG Independence from Australia. On a sad note it's not safe anymore. When we drove to Lae through the Markam Valley back then you count on one hand the number of vehicles you passed on the road. Also got to see the Septic area and Solomon Islands.

Great question! I’m actually not too sure I’d have to look at a map. PNG is very small.

Ukarumpa is in the eastern highlands of PNG. Sometimes refered to as Central Highlands. The climate there is cool .

Ukarumpa is in the Eastern Highlands. Nearby major towns are Goroka and Lae. Next closest but smaller town is called Kainantu. Ukarumpa is largely supported by Missionaries in a lot of parts of the world but mainly by Americans as far as I remember. Beautiful place. I loved this video. Brought back a lot of memories.❤️

Ukarumpa is the main base for the Summer Institute of Linguistics, SIL. SIL is the linguistic organization of Wycliffe Bible Translators. Ukarumpa is the center of Bible translation for all of Papua New Guinea. Translators living in the remote villages throughout the country come as they work on translating and reducing to writing the many unwritten languages of PNG. Once translated into the mother tongues of each tribe they then teach them to read and write their own language. Most of the missionaries at Ukarumpa are from The US and Australia as well as many other countries. The locations listed below are accurate.
