I am a 70 plus grandmother and I simply love this song and your analysis of it. I didn't know what to expect and I have never watched the Eurovision contest. I know that Abba won years ago...haha. I am not a fan of rap, but I simply love everything about this song, this video and the band. "The song is an ode to a mother, with the narrator speaking of good memories of their own mother. The song initially talks about how much their mother has aged, invoking a nostalgic past. The song later addresses the hardships of a mother, with the narrator realizing how much the mother has done for them. A "lullaby", within the end of each rap verse, brings the narrator back to when they their mother took care of them."

I was surprised to like this song the first time I heard it because I don’t like rap vary often. I learned the lyrics of the chorus and thought “a man who still wants a lullaby while realizing his mother is turning gray. That’s not your typical rap topic. I loved the choreography. Simple and engaging yet it didn’t remind me of anything else. Then I saw the alternative translation over the war zone video. … That imagery along with the slight translational emphasis on mother country over simply mother, amplified everything by 11. If you haven’t seen today’s video you should.

Stephania is his mother. He dedicated the song to his mom. It’s sick crazy cool. I grew up in Kalush - it is a small town in western Ukraine. And I live now in Canada. And I am extremely proud of my Ukrainian roots. 🇨🇦❤️💙💛🇺🇦 the national ethnic instrument is called tilinka. It’s different from SOPILKA that was played by A-Go last year. THANK you for your cool analysis. ❤️🇨🇦🇺🇦💛💙🇺🇦🇨🇦 Аnd this: Yessssss. Syncopated beats. Ukrainian folklore notes. Brakedancing. Ukrainian gorgeous costumes are amazing. In original video- the guy who is breakdancing is called “kylymman” which means carpet man. His costume covers all his body and it’s coloured with Ukrainian ornaments. And… Noone ever saw his real face. Only stage image which is even more cooler! 😎mysterious. Mr. incognito.

Also in background sometimes you can hear a tsymbaly. The tsymbaly (Ukrainian: цимбали) is the Ukrainian version of the hammer dulcimer. It is a chordophone made up of a trapezoidal box with metal (steel or bronze) strings strung across it. The tsymbaly is played by striking two beaters against the strings.

This song is dedicated to Mother Stefania, pink hat rapper’s mom. “Lully-lully” before the chorus is a beginning of Ukrainian lullaby. Chorus translation “Mother Strfania, the field blooms, but she is turning grey. Sing me a lullaby mum I want to hear your native word”. Rap parts are about growing up in both hard or simply times, but always with mother’s support. Thank you for your reaction. With love from Ukraine 💛💙

I keep seeing the same and it makes no sense. There are a lot of good songs in this year like Albania, Netherlands, France, and Cyprus. But to me this one is the more unique and has the most musicality and that something that make it amazing. If it wins, it will win because of its merits. It's an amazing song. I hope people vote for it because of how much they love it not as a sympathy vote. Kalush Orchestra deserves better than that.

I was very interested in your opinion about the Ukrainian song - it's one of my favorites in the competition, and I was happy to find out it's so positive :-) In my view, this uncoventional combination of traditional ethnic elements and energetic good-quality modern rap is really entertaining. I disagree with those who claim that the Ukrainian group are bound to win due to political reasons. I think their song stands for itself, it's high-quality stuff with capturing melody, great amount of rhythmical energy, and a clever and intriguing concept. I'll keep my fingers crossed for 🇺🇦, too!

I'm Italian and I love "Brividi" but I also love "Stefania" ..therefore I am quite in trouble. What I appreciate in ESC is just bringing songs in one's mother tongue, knowing how to convey emotions and knowing how to connect to others in the UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF MUSIC. I'm sorry if I contradict you but English is not the universal language even if it is undoubtedly the most used. However most of the people following ESC are non-English, they can understand and speak English but it remains their second language. There are thoughts and emotions that the English language struggles to convey, as well as vice versa. So I prefer to be captured by the sound of instruments and voices, then go and see the translated text (in English because it is usually more accurate and not translated literally) and, if I find a good translation, analyze how the original language of the song is expressed. This is how I started in the distant past with Dylan when English was a difficult subject for me.

Alina's song was nice sounding but absolutely empty and somewhat confusing for those familiar with Ukrainian language and culture, while this one is packed with context and allusions. Btw, this vid should have English subs, you should check them and you will get the point of this song 💛💙
