UKRAINE WAR: NATO botch-up - Why the West can't get its arms industry going
In an interview with WELT, military expert Gustav Gressel explains why NATO countries are so unable to counter the Russian war economy. In the third year of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the West's inertia in supplying military equipment is evident. While Russia is quickly switching to a war economy, production in the West is being delayed due to bureaucracy and dependence on private companies. Large orders for military equipment that were supposed to be placed in 2022 are only now being implemented. The German government ordered Patriot missiles and artillery ammunition in December 2023, while France invested in the spring. Small and medium-sized companies that manufacture sub-components are having difficulty supplying the required quantities. The war will last for years, but the West has a chance to catch up if it acts consistently.
