Hand and wrist injuries are particularly common in sports. Most sports injuries are caused by either a direct trauma to the hand or wrist such as:
- a strain
- dislocation
- ligament tear or fracture
- from a chronic injury or overuse
Ulnar-sided wrist pain is common among athletes who subject their wrists to forceful rotational movements (eg golf, football, tennis, hockey and rock climbing too). Damage to various intricate structures within the ulnar wrist, such as the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), can lead to the development of pain on the ulnar side of the wrist.
This taping technique can be used for ECU or TFCC wrist injuries as it helps to limit rotation. It can help to support the wrist alongside rehab with your hand therapy practitioner, who will create a treatment plan that is specific to your injury and lifestyle.
One advantage of this taping method is it has a tendency to remain securely in place even when individuals perspire, making it an excellent choice for athletes.
