Thank u. This was a very nice vid. A while ago sold almost all my nikon gear, due to what seems to be two faulty d850 in a raw and bad Nikon service experience. Got a used 810 and two lenses. I was short of a good mid range, so i got a used 50 1.8g. man! It was like starting over. I have so much fun with it. It's a classic. Love it. In the past I also had nikon 2.8d and 1.4g, i believe this one is the best.

I really appreciated this Matt - great comparison. I just ordered the Z 40mm (couldn't pass up the price) - but I am interested in getting another 50 for my Z6 and future Z body. (Not positive it will be a Z9 - we'll see if anything is announced in Oct.) I do have the 1.4g lens, and I do really like it - but I'm considering the Z 1.8. Anyway - great video again .. and WOW - that girl can sing! What a beautiful voice.

I also tested a wide variety of 40-50mm lenses and my conclusion is : 50mm 1.8G = best bang for the buck and it’s fully backwards compatible with older Nikon F bodies and newer Z bodies (with the FTZ2 adapter) very sharp from F1.8 to F2.8 (way sharper than the 50mm 1.4G) Sigma 40 and 50mm ART 1.4 = stellar performance, the 40mm is Zeiss level quality, the 50mm Art is no slouch either. If you can get one bellow 400$ go for it. The 50mm 1.8 Z is the best option if you only shoot on the Z system but the Sigma Art lenses have better overall IQ and tones The 50mm 1.2 is probably great but too expensive for most photographers The Tamron 45mm 1.8 VC is the only one that integrates image stabilization, so it’s very useful to shoot low light photography and video. It has some compatibility issues with newer Nikon bodies though but this can be fixed with the Tamron USB dock The Nikon 40mm F2 Z is tiny but not extremely sharp wide open. Better shoot it at F2.5 or get the sigma 40mm 1.4 instead if you don’t mind the extra size with the FTZ2 adapter

Hey Matt, love your videos! Quick suggestion for you: Make a video summary of best body/lens combinations for D series pro bodies say going back to D3. Currently the D series pro bodies are dirt cheap on ebay, I just picked up mint D5, but the information about "best gear for them" is distributed among multiple video reviews. While it is easy to say latest greatest is the best, i am pretty sure my nikon 105 f/1.4 or zeiss milvus 85mm f/1.4 are probably overkill for 20MP D5 and even more so for older 12 and 16MP D3 and D4; even though they shine on my 36MP D800. It actually feels like the nikon trinity of f/2.8 zooms is all that D5 needs, even though original 24-70 f/2.8 i find lacking on d800; while gems like 105 f/1.4 or milvuses are really for higher MP, slower, more deliberate bodies like d800. At the same time perhaps 300mm f/2.8 and 600mm/f/4 probably would fare better on D5 due to larger pixels and closer to 1/FL shutter speed rule vs say 1/(3*FL) i tend to find works better on D800. I am not pretending to know what i am talking about, but i think a "gear match up summary video" of this type would be helpful for the community.

Your editorial on the lack of F2Z compatibility with the AF-D (screw drive) lenses is spot on. I registered a complaint with Nikon support quite a while ago on this issue. I’d welcome all of your dedicated viewers to do the same. Please tell them that leaving behind a metric-crap-ton of wonderful AF-D lenses they REFUSE to support with an F2Z is not acceptable. Many of these lenses are nowhere on any roadmap, and may never be reproduced at all as a native Z lens. Yet they continue to sell them (screw-type) with NO PATH FORWARD. That’s just STUPID and an affront to the intelligence of the buying public.

Looking for a decent lens for the Zf that isn't overly large for the form factor but that still has great image quality. Right now the 50mm 1.8 S looks to be the only real game in town as far as what I'm looking for, but these Z lenses from Nikon look like crap. They have no style at all, not to mention they seem extra long for the aperture they're offering.

It's because manufacturers make modern lenses with more glass elements than ever before, in favor of increased sharpness to better suit modern high resolution (50MP, 60MP, 100MP...) sensors in cameras... However, because of that, the lenses severely lose on and lack micro contrast and tonality. If you look at the best performing lenses, with the best tonality results and best micro contrast, that give off that popular ''3D pop'' or as people nowadays call it ''the Zeiss pop,'' then you will see that all of the lenses on the list are old (or oldER) lenses with 8, 7 or 6 glass elements, spread into 6, 5 or 4 groups. Less glass means better processed light and better processed light means more tonality and more micro contrast - and with more micro contrast comes the famous "3D pop!"
