Thanks for the guide. I have this configured with 3 internal drives and everything works great when used 1 disk at at time (in any drive). If I try to do 2 or more disks at once the software steps all over itself in the autorip tmp directory and I get either no output or corrupt files (multiple VMs writing to the same file). Any ideas how to fix this other than creating a separate share for each drive (VM) so they use different directories?
@ExcelsiorTech
2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I have not had this issue. I am guessing that some disks are named in a generic name (in my testing I did not have this happen, but it totally can) so the same-named file will be attempted to be made on the same CIFS share at the same time. Is this the case? If, so I wonder if we can tell each VM individually to make the tmp files with different prefixes or something.

You can have multiple instances of MakeMKV running, with each one pointing at a specific optical drive. They’ll rip simultaneously just fine, no scripting or VMs needed. I only have three BD-RW drives in my setup, but it makes quick work of TV series sets. The time consuming part is renaming the files with the proper episode numbers. The order on the DVD doesn’t always match the order they aired in, or even the intended order.

For a plex server do you recommend using handbrake to rencode or just using the mkv output of the ripper. I'm planning on only streaming from inside my network.
@ExcelsiorTech
2 жыл бұрын
For just inside your network you have no need for transcoding with the right players at the other end. I suggest and nvidia shield, Apple TV 4k, or a windows or mac PC (Probably linux is fine too, but it has been a while since I tried it). You need a player that does not have limitations that force the plex server to transcode or make sure the plex server is powerful enough to handle it. I find the best success with intel machines (haswell or newer) using the builtin encoders. A warning though that files straight from MakeMKV are just the raw data from the disks, decrypted. The files are HUGE. 480p DVD averages 4-6gig, Blu-Ray 1080P 15-30gig, and 4K disks are up to 50gig... per movie! Using handbrake, or giving enough resources to the VM (as seen in the video) to reasonably transcode for you (it's a mirror function, so you still have to clean up the raw mkv files), is not a bad idea. I am a sound snob more than a video snob, so I usually prioritize making sure the sound it original as possible. Back to your question. No you don't need to reencode, but your player and your network needs to be up for the challenge. Wireless networks in my home have trouble with some movies and player combinations. Wiring up can help, but even then the player can struggle. If you want a sure thing use a PC player. I have the best results with that though HDR is more compatible with something like the Shield or ATV. Sorry for the long winded answer, I hope that answered your question. :-)

I am sure there is a way to do that. You have to map a second share where you want your music. Then you have to edit the /etc/ripit/config file on each VM. In that file there is a variable "output=/storage/music" you have to replace that variable with the new share you created.

The restriction is for the single VM. No single VM can utilize more cores than you have physically. But you can have many VMs using them at once. Your limitation then becomes RAM and IO performance and amount as well as taxing the CPU with concurrent operations from different VMs

Interesting. I haven’t heard of this problem before. But I only tested it on a couple 4K discs. While I love the set up that I used on this video, the biggest problem is that vortex box has not been updated in a number of years. And the makeMKV they use in the distribution is quite old. I’m wondering if a number of problems are cropping up because of that. It’s for that reason I am actually right this very moment looking at other ripping options that might be even better, but for now this really is still a good option. If you are using Windows or Linux with a desktop that you can log into, I would suggest using makeMKV in standalone with your drive and see if you were able to rip the 4K disc with audio.

@HaloTekkenFan55
2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I did see your original video and went on my own ripping journey after noticing the issues that the original version had (mainly simultaneous ripping). Your new idea is great improvement though I do have a suggestion that does lower the hardware requirements (especially ram). I ended up using Ubuntu and an open source project called Automatic Ripping Machine. It auto detects discs inserted, auto grabs metadata, names movies, provides a database of Rips to prevent duplicates, has handbrake integration, can be virtualized with docker, and hosts a web gui to check on stuff. It does all this on a single Ubuntu install thus skipping the need of virtualization or having multiple webgui. Setup can be done easier through docker virtualization but it may use a tad more ram, though less than running full operating systems in virtual box. I have it in control of 8 laptop DVD drives and 1 blu ray drive as it's not limited by the amount of ram. It's only limited by power supply connections and storage speed to keep up with all the rips at once. I have similar hardware to your PC specs except my ram usage rarely exceeds 2GBs since I don't use virtualization. Hope you find the info useful and perhaps I'll see a version 3 video out sometime in the future!

@@ExcelsiorTech, a bare metal setup is pretty quick if your familiar with Linux. It works well on about 3-4 DVDs at once and 1 blu-ray and a DVD or two at once. After that either the OS bugs out or maybe it's my hardware but it stops recognizing one or two dvd drives I was using until a reboot. I may take a page from your book and do a stable os as the base either windows or proxmox and have two Ubuntu VMs with arm on them. Should still be able to lower requirements but allow me to get past the 3-4 drive bottleneck.

After much troubleshooting and testing with different OSs, I can firmly say that it is a hardware issue on my side. Seems my 6 sata port HBA is what was causing my disappearing drives. Running a windows host and a single Ubuntu VM let me pass through all 9 DVD drives and rip simultaneously. So I can recommend ARM, just have to be weary of the cheap Amazon HBAs. This is an amazing tutorial, finished it all the way to the end, ripping works ok but im having an issue similar to @xentricone .My setup consist of 8 (yes 8) internal DVDs installed on a dvd duplicator case connected through a lsi9211-8i to the Win10 host where the vm's are installed and running, Windows recognizes all dvd's and each one has a drive letter assigned. The problem consist that when I insert all the cd's (mainly movies) to the ripper the output file becomes corrupted/incomplete, the discs eject before ever getting close to 100%. I did the "ripper.tmp" to "diskx.tmp" fix but still only work as intended when inserting 1 movie at a time. The output folder for the movies is weirdly named "html", this is the directory so you can see what I mean, "\\HeadquartersNAS\vfolder\movies\\body\html". All the vm's are trying to save the ripped file into that "html" folder. Did I miss something in the "ripper.tmp" fix? Any reply is very much appreciated!! surprisingly there aren't many tutorials this detailed out there. Edit: I eventually found the problem, it turns out my system was running low on RAM by the time the ripping progress was halfway through. So I upgraded from 8gb to 16gb the host pc and increase from 512mb to 1024mb the VMs memory, that solved my problem. I hope someone finds it useful.
