I am delighted that you find this helpful. I absolutely loved playing this MG campaign. It was a lot of fun, and after Malvern Hill, I think that you will find this campaign gets a lot easier. Just buy all of the good guns. - I highly recommend using the UI mod. This mod fixes most bugs in the game. You can set the game to almost all vanilla settings. The mod also has the option to fix the prepared positions penalty for infantry. I only use the artillery option, which allows enemy artillery to target my artillery. This makes the game a lot more challenging. But you can set the mod to all vanilla settings if you want. - I have Union BG campaign that I am posting currently where I am testing the massive army strategy. I used this strategy in my CSA LG campaign, and it was very effective. In my BG Union campaign, this strategy set the campaign on super easy mode. I'm not sure how this strategy will play out on MG, but my guess is that it will work. The only problem is that the Union can get too many men, and run out of unit slots. Anyway, check out my CSA LG or latest Union BG campaign to see the massive army strategy. - Both strategies work. Using a small army, I would concentrate on building elite artillery and sniper units, and getting the highest kill ratios possible. Using the massive-army strategy, kill-ratios are not as important. Getting the most XP for the largest number of men is all that matters. While I have tested the massive army strategy in the CSA LG campaign and the Union BG campaign, I haven't played it in the Union MG campaign. - I hope that you find this series helpful. I think that the Union MG campaign is the most realistic and immersive level to play. I hope that you enjoy your campaign as much as I did mine. And best of luck to you. Please let me know how it goes. - Massive army BG: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t2pr1I2dnHehrGk - Massive army LG: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGtonYismnN9aX4

Great job on the vids and strategy for many of your battles. If your goal at Philippi is to take the fewest casualties as possible, the best way to play it is to end the battle early. This is done by taking the objective with less than 10 minutes left on the counter in phase one. One strategy to do this is to sit one INF and one SCM in the town to cover the south bridge (they won't see much action until the end of the phase when CSA reinf try to cross the bridge). Then, place both guns and your remaining forces near the north bridge to force the first CSA unit out of the position just across the north bridge. Sit tight and wait as CSA units will keep coming up to try to take that position and your forces will shatter or whittle them down to ineffective levels. Try to position a unit so you can see the CSA guns in the middle of town, so your guns can take them out when not pounding CSA INF that comes up. With less than 25 to 30 minutes remaining on the counter, head across the bridge. You want to time it so you take the town with the counter LESS than 10 minutes - if you do it before 10 minutes you will trigger phase two. This will end the battle early and you never need to deal with the CSA counter-attack in phase two. This works fine with the first two difficulty levels. On MG and Legendary, the CSA reinforcements that come into the game with 1:35-ish left in the first phase, will concentrate on whichever bridge has the most number of Union troops (North bridge in this case). So, I usually put two INF units at the south bridge to pull them that way and keep north bridge clear of CSA reinforcements. With less than 30 minutes left you can send one of those INF units to the north bridge to join your invasion of the city, again, to take the objective with less than 10 minutes left. Do yourself a favor and SAVE when the game hits 30 min left in case you don't take the objective.

This is brilliant, thanks. I didn't know the second phase could be skipped. I have always wanted to skip that part. Yes, the only goal of the first battle is to get out of it, but after that, we must get a complete wipe of the AI in every battle. With the UI mod, I try to max out the number of captures in every battle. I think in my last playthrough I finished one battle early, and that was the side battle immediately before Washington, so there was no payoff in taking additional losses. - I have a test of a large army strategy in a BG Union campaign using all infantry and 2500 size units (this is OP), a Union LG campaign using units of about 2k with a lot of artillery, and a LG CSA campaign using a massive army strategy (over 200k at Washington). I hope that you give these playthroughs a look. The strategies and tactics in 2020 and 2021 were based on the latest information that we know about how the campaign works, and these strategies make the campaign a lot easier.

@@SomethingCompass As far as I know, you cannot skip the second phase of Philippi when using the UI/AI Mod since taking the objective always trips a contested timer of 20 minutes with the mod and then transitions to the second phase when the contested timer ends regardless of the amount of time on the mission timer. I am a late comer to the game and didn't start playing until October of 2020. Recently finished doing BG/MG/LG of the base game in parallel, so fighting each battle on those three difficulty levels before going to the next battle. I wanted to see how difficultly level changed the game in battle and armory availability. Doing the same with CSA now.

@@pauld.6216 Thanks Paul D. I was just now sitting down to leave you a comment about this mechanic, and you beat me to the comments section. I ran a test with the J&P mod, and it worked exactly as you described for the UI mod. The good news is that the AI on MG in the J&P mod was nicely suicidal at the bridge where I placed my entire army, and even though I dragged the battle out for the entire time, my units got a lot of kills and then took very few losses. So thanks to your post, I have the best start to a campaign so far with either the J&P mod or vanilla. - Here is my CSA LG campaign using the UI mod: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGtonYismnN9aX4 - I found the three levels of difficulty to be significantly different, almost different games. The most immersive is MG, the most relaxing is BG, and the most fun is LG. - Good luck with all of your campaigns.

This is great news, you have found one of the most fun and addictive games that you will every play. I have played dozens of campaigns, and this game remains incredibly fun after thousands of hours. You can try many different strategies and army builds, and this makes every campaign unique. The CSA campaign is completely different from the Union campaign, and every level of difficulty feels like a different game. This means that you can play many campaigns and each one will be unique and interesting. - CSA infantry is much better than Union infantry, but the CSA struggles to get men and good weapons. The Union gets plenty of men and cash, and also great weapons, but the quality of the infantry is always inferior to the CSA. Not only does the Union infantry start with terrible efficiency, but the CSA has hidden buffs for melee and stamina. Union infantry is fragile, but fortunately you have a lot of it. The challenge for the Union is to get the infantry enough XP so that the Union army can fight. The result is that you can feel the progression of the army as the campaign advances. - I recommend using the UI mod. This mod improves the UI, gives you a lot more information about weapons and range damage, and fixes some of the bugs and glitches in the vanilla game. It also allows you to get some weapons from captures. This mechanic should have been in the vanilla game. Getting captures is the best way to drive down the enemy manpower pool, and it also makes melee combat more likely. This makes battles a lot more fun for the player. - This series was recorded on a low-quality computer. I have several other playthroughs using better equipment, and the quality of the videos in these playthroughs is much better than what you see here. Also, we spent a few years trying to figure out the hidden mechanics in the game, and not everything I say in this series is up-to-date. - One important hidden mechanic is the damage curve, which means that there is a hidden debuff to units that are oversized. The debuff for infantry at 2500 is only 10-15%, which is why I now play using units of 2500. However, the debuff for support units is painful. An artillery unit of 24 guns does about the damage of a unit of 4 guns. For this reason, I recommend using units slightly over the max effective size. The max effective size is: Arty 12 guns, dismounted cav and skirmishers 350, and melee cav 750 (no penalty for melee). I use: arty 14, rifle cav and skirmishers 375, and melee cav 750. Melee cav of 650 seems to move a bit faster though, so you will likely see melee cav of 650 in other KZitemr's videos. - I recommend using detached skirmishers. These units fight way above their weight and take reduced losses, and they have superior spotting ability. Using them confuses the AI, and significantly reduces your overall losses in a battle. When approaching artillery, always lead with detached skirmishers. Infantry units do not like canister. - I recommend playing on BG until you get comfortable with the mechanics. I happily played for 1,000 hours on BG before moving to MG. But move to MG after the battles feel too easy on BG. MG is difficult, but the most balanced and immersive level of play. The CSA will fight hard on MG, and you will face much larger units equipped with very good weapons. On the plus side, you will recover good weapons instead of the junk that you recover on BG. For an experienced player, playing on MG is easier, because the army gets more kills and XP in battle, and the recovered weapons are used to equip the massive Union army. - Here is a link to a BG Union campaign using the Massive army strategy. The video quality is also much better in this series than what you see in this video. kzitem.info/news/bejne/k4F7qqKagHyKoZw - I also have a complete CSA LG campaign on KZitem. - I recommend joining the UGCW Reddit page. I am Requiem Archer there. Pandakraut is on Reddit, and he is also the mod author of the UI mod. He is always helpful if you have any questions. He also has videos on KZitem that are very helpful. - Good luck, and I hope that you enjoy this game as much as I do.

In the earlier post, I accidentally gave you the link to the J&P mod, which is a complete overhaul of the game. This mod is not recommend for new players. The UI mod keeps the vanilla game and only fixes some of the bugs and glitches, and it improves the UI. In contrast, the J&P mod changes everything about the game. Sorry about the confusion. Here is the link to BG Union UI mod campaign using the Massive Army strategy: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t2pr1I2dnHehrGk - You can play the J&P overhaul mod if you wish, but I highly recommend playing on BG for a while before jumping to MG. MG in the J&P mod is brutal. - On the plus side, you can get a preview of the J&P mod and judge for yourself if it looks interesting to you. But for most people, the vanilla game with the UI mod is the way to start.

Thanks, and I am delighted that you enjoyed the video. And I am guessing that you are playing on Major General difficulty, so congrats on taking on the much harder level of playing the game. After playing on MG, going back to BG is almost impossible. - I think that dealing with scaling is important through Malvern Hill, after that the Union army is so powerful that it doesn't matter. On MG, I personally don't like fighting battles where every enemy unit is 2900, and I don't know why I should care that much, but I prefer the enemy army on MG scalled to my army. On BG it doesn't matter because the enemy usually has a low level of experience and weapons. But on MG the AI can be all 3-star units and be armed with fayettevilles. - I have gotten used to fighting with units of about 1200 size, and although it took a while to get used to, it works out well. Now that I am used to it I don't care about building larger units. - What do you mean about the scaling of the 12 guns max? Are you talking about the debuff to efficiency after 12 guns? I am currently playing a campaign and my artillery is at 12, the infantry at 1200, the skirmishers are at 350, rifle cav is at 360, and melee cav is at 600. The infantry is probably going to 1500 by the end of the campaign. I am guessing the debuff after a fixed number in every unit is what you are referring to. The plus side of having small units is that they can have the best weapons for a much lower overall cost, so they will be deadlier. This leads to a much higher kill ratio, and fewer losses. - In this playthrough I get about 8:1, and lose about 100,000. The army at the end is a beast. But from what I learned in this campaign, I think I could build an even better army next time. - pandakraut has several mods for UGCW, one of which removes the debuff to your oversized units. I recommend taking a look at all of his mods. - I love the name google suxxx. Well done. I am looking forward to the day they get some real competition and eventually goes bankrupt. - Fiasco Games has a Union playthrough on MG difficulty that he is doing now. It is very good and I highly recommend it. - Thanks for leaving a comment and I hope you have a great time in your campaign.

Interesting tactic, never tried it. İ usually pull back and let the CSA cross the bridge, when they are broke i rush the bridge and take the objective. A bit tricky but it works. Great info on the 6 pounders, i always sell them but now i will reconsider using them near the frontline. You make excellent use of skirmisher units
@SomethingCompass

Thanks. I have watched the tactic of letting the AI cross the bridge, and that works. But I think this way is easy and it usually results in the fewest losses to the units that I take to camp. But I am always looking for better ways to win this battle. - The 6 pounders work fine, but they get quickly replaced by 24 h and 10 Ord. Also, the 6 WEIRD is one of my favorite guns, cheep, fast, and versatile. But yes, I put all smooth bore guns right behind the the front line as the AI charges, and as far forward as possible when the AI is finished charging and it is time to rack up kills. - I don't fiddle with skirmishers on BG difficulty because I don't like the micro-management, but on harder levels of difficulty they are priceless.

I am delighted that you were sent here. I try to make videos that give players as much info as possible about the games that I play. One of the things about UGCW is that this game has a lot of hidden mechanics. It took a long time for all of us to figure out what these mechanics were, and how these mechanics affected scaling and combat. I try to discuss these mechanics as I play. - I did a series after this MG playthrough on BG where most of what I learned on MG is presented. That series is only through Antietam, because I was getting too many 20:1 battles and I was losing interest. But for a discussion of mechanics, that series might be helpful. See the BG series here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rH2N1pd5hHuloZw - While doing this MG series, Aetius and pandakraut learned a lot about how the game works, and so I started building a slightly different army as that information came out. I will discuss the new findings a few battles in. - MG is the most balanced and immersive level of difficulty. But I recommend playing on BG until you are comfortable and getting good results. There will come a time when BG feels too easy. Then you are ready for MG. In my opinion, MG is more fun. I really like that the AI will stand and fight. That makes every battle a lot more fun to play. - For the Union, artillery is OP. Buy 24 H and 20 P at every opportunity. The 24 H dominates the early and mid campaign, while the 20 P is the best weapon on the battlefield in the end-game. Also, in the early and mid-game, a couple of snipers and some rifle cav are very useful. Rifle cav does double damage dismounted, and they are great for running down isolated units. For cav, I love the Maynard, but the Burnside isn't bad. Currently I am assigning one rifle cav of 360 and one sniper of 360 per Corps (350 is the max effective size). Melee cav can be 750, but they become increasingly useless as the campaign goes on. - I currently make all of my batteries 12 guns. This makes it easy to move guns between units. - Good luck. I hope that you enjoy this series and that it helps you with your game.

I am delighted that this series has been helpful. We have learned a great deal about the hidden mechanics in the game since 2018, when this video was posted to youtube. I have also learned a great deal about army building strategies for the end-game, both for the Union and for the CSA campaigns. Below are links to my most recent playthroughs, one CSA and one Union. - Union BG: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t2pr1I2dnHehrGk - CSA LG: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGtonYismnN9aX4 - For both campaigns, I recommend building infantry units of 2500 as soon as possible. Infantry units have a 10-15% penalty for being oversized to 2500, which isn't a bad debuff. Melee cav can be 750, but rifle cav and snipers should be no bigger than 375. Artillery should be 12-14 guns. The penalty for all support units is huge, so never be oversized with snipers, rifle cav, or artillery. There is no debuff for melee, so melee cav can be any size. - Using detached skirmishers is a must in the campaign. Detached skirmishers cut your losses in about half, plus having detached skirmishers increases the efficiency of the oversized parent unit, meaning that the parent unit will move faster and do more damage per shot. - There is an exploit that I show in my videos where we can hit Pause and place units on top of each other and then hit Hold, and these units will fight stacked on top of each other. This is an exploit in the game, and is basically cheating. I recommend not doing that. - For army building, the CSA must buy Recruits with Reputation to have the best chance at Washington. The Union doesn't need to do this, but buying Recruits with Reputation will allow the Union to build a massive army that can steam-roll the campaign after Malvern Hill. For both campaigns, the player must get full wipes in every battle, and a kill ratio of at least 3:1. - Because the UI mod rewards capturing enemy units, I highly recommend using the mod. Charging into melee to get captures makes battles much more exciting. - I hope these videos help, and I wish you the best in your campaign.

Good opening primer, touch on a lot of fundamentals. You may want to mention that the reason the fortifications early on are garbage are because of their cover bonuses being poorer than buildings/woods. You can generally see what kind of fortification it is just on mouseover and want to avoid fences and other light cover. The one thing I probably disagree on is Politics. I don't think the value is there for a Medicine rush as much because of how much you get to leverage allied forces for the first battles, meaning you should lose less for awhile. I'm not sure the value is there for Econ early because you should be able to limit your purchases with all the free weapons early (I try to only buy the really rare stuff). I don't raise Training until late because you can work around it the way I construct an army except for Cav, so of the 'money' skills that only leaves Politics. It's true you don't need the manpower at all, though.

I am glad you found this helpful. The small units are a problem, as is the problem of not being able to see. In this series I had the resolution (in the Options menu) dialed up as high as possible, which makes the units small. Lower resolution makes the units and the UI much larger. In addition, I had a potato for a computer in this series. I have several other playthroughs using a new computer and a great graphics card, and also a much lower resolution so that it is easier for players to see units and unit cards. - If the resolution is too low, you will find that fighting on the edge of the map can become very difficult. I recommend something around 1080. Higher resolution is fine if you are not recording videos. - This series is with smaller units and also a smaller units size. I have found it easier to fight with the Massive Army Strategy, which is a huge army and large infantry units of 2500. I have a LG CSA and a BG Union campaign showing that strategy, and both playthroughs are on the new computer with a good graphics card. See Union: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t2pr1I2dnHehrGk And CSA LG: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGtonYismnN9aX4 - I have a playthrough of the J&P mod. Please tell me everything you know, hahaha. I learn a lot from everyone I watch and by reading comments and posts. I only wish that there were more playthroughs on YT for me to watch. If you make a series, I will be the first to subscribe. - MG is very hard, and it plays nothing like BG. Adjusting to MG requires adjusting to a very different level of difficulty, and everyone goes through a learning phase. For me, I had a couple of failed campaigns where I tried to play the same way I did on BG, and that went very poorly. I had to change how I played and thought about the game because a lot of things that worked on BG will not work on MG. - I have a BG playthrough on YT, but BG is way too easy to be interesting. MG is where UGCW feels like a difficult Civil War battle against a tough enemy. On MG the enemy will fight and fight hard. Also, the Union campaign on MG plays nothing like the CSA campaign. Union units are weak compared to CSA infantry units, and we can't fight the same way that a CSA general fights. Our advantage is in numbers, money, better weapons, and more weapons of high quality. And because the CSA fights hard on MG difficulty, we have to use these strengths to win. - I try for a high kill count, a high kill ratio, and low losses. I fight as an infantry officer would. But that isn't necessary, I have watched people win the campaign on MG with close to 1:1 losses, but that is a tough way to play the campaign on MG. - The key to the Union campaign is to survive past Malvern Hill. After that the campaign gets easier.

hahaha, I guess that this means that you find MG easy for the CSA. How difficult was Union MG for you in comparison? - I have never played the CSA campaign on MG. But from playing the CSA on Legendary twice, I found the early part of the campaign much easier than the Union campaign, and actually rather easy, especially my second time playing it. Both CSA legendary campaigns are posted on KZitem. The Union Legendary campaign is very challenging through Malvern hill. After that, the Union campaign is fairly easy. - In my current CSA campaign I am only concerned about having enough men for Washington. I am right before Gettysburg, and the results so far have been surprisingly good. The only concern with Washington is the unusually large size of the Union army, but I think that my army is going to be large enough to handle it. For the Union campaign, the battle of Richmond is too long but not that difficult. - I found the Union campaign on MG to be the most realistic. Legendary was not very immersive, but as a game it is the most fun level to play. In some ways Legendary is easier, we get a lot more kills (XP), and we capture and recover much better weapons. - You can see my Union Legendary and my two CSA Legendary walkthroughs on KZitem. I really enjoyed this MG campaign using small units and a small army, but I also enjoy playing with much larger units as well. Both styles are fun., but the next time I play a Union campaign it will be with all oversized units. - Do you use the UI mod? I highly recommend it.

Something Compass - I’ll take a look at the UI mod, are you referring to the rebalance one as I have tried that? The early battles are in my opinion the ones that you would want to be hard, plenty of manpower, lots of room for flanking. By the end of a MG campaign with the CSA you’re almost out of men, you’re low of supplies, every battle feels like a meet grinder. Legendary felt incredibly difficult on a unit to unit basis, the scaling just made me laugh at points so I went over to the scourge of war games.

@@sirhumphreyappleby8399 The UI mod is very different from the rebalance mod. The rebalance mod is for those who find Legendary too easy, and it changes everything about the vanilla game. The UI mod allows for a mostly vanilla game, but we have easy to see cones-of-fire and also better information on units and perks. I am using the UI mod in my current CSA Legendary playthrough. The UI mod is configurable, and you can turn some settings on or off. In my current campaign I have not turned on the improved fortifications, but I have turned on the AI targets my artillery option. In other words, you can configure the mod to play a vanilla game, or change some things to make the game more to how you want to play. HiBob Warbob has a great video about the mod, it is the first video in his CSA Legendary series. - I haven't played the rebalance mod, but it looks like a completely different game. - I am finding the CSA legendary campaign to be easy with the UI mod. I am bringing the largest army I can to every battle, and using reputation to buy recruits. I don't care how large the enemy army is, the more the better. A larger enemy army just means more XP for my army. The secret with the UI mod is to capture as many units as possible, and use those weapons to equip your army for free. In addition, I don't buy vets or invest in training. This frees up money to buy weapons. - If you check out my CSA legendary campaign, you will see that I am bringing infantry units of 2500 to battles. This has about a 10% penalty to efficiency (on vanilla settings, which I am using). This strategy works. Basically these units are overwhelming against the AI, and I can steam-roll over him if I need to. But surround and capture is the only way to harvest rifles in the quantity I need, so that is the tactic you will see. - Anyway, I hope that you give the UI mod a try. You can find links to the UI mod on Reddit. Thanks and good luck.

In this series I don't use the UI mod, so this is vanilla. In vanilla UGCW, there is only the cone-of-fire for artillery, and it is not broken up into different ranges. But in the UI mod, the cone-of-fire for artillery is divided into three sections that are easy to see: canister, exploding shell, and solid shot. For this and many other excellent reasons, I highly recommend using the UI mod. Being able to see canister range for the 24 H is priceless. - I use the UI mod in my CSA LG series: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGtonYismnN9aX4

@@jojo-gy9pp Here is a link to a video that shows how to install mods to UGCW. Although this video is for the J&P mod, the UI mod installs about the same way if I recall. Check the specific instructions for the UI mod to be sure. The UI mod is what you want. See general mod install video here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/soeomnaEbJtpraw - The UI mod: forum.game-labs.net/topic/25750-ui-and-ai-customizations-mod-v192/ - You can always check for the latest version by searching google: UGCW UI mod - The install is easier and faster than it first looks. I recommend starting the mod with a new campaign. Good luck.

@@jojo-gy9pp There are a lot of hidden mechanics in the game, and I have spent years trying to understand them. My CSA LG campaign has about the best information that I have. Or the last Union BG campaign here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t2pr1I2dnHehrGk - Once you understand how the game works, the campaigns become a lot easier. Even Legendary eventually becomes easy, but that takes a while. I hope that you don't give up and have every success. The campaign is worth the time and effort.
