I know that this comment is not related to this video, but I really wanted to recommend the Shahnameh book to you. The subject of the Shahnameh is the myths and history of Iran from the beginning to the Arab invasion of Iran in the 7th century AD. But the Shahnameh is not a completely historical book and contains three mythological, heroic and historical parts. And because books with fantasy genre are rarely found in Iranian literature. I decided to recommend Shahnameh to you to know your professional opinion about this book. Please share your opinion about Shahnameh. It means a lot to me.

A habit building tip from Atomic Habits - you can't break habits, only change them. I implemented it a couple of years back and it boosted my reading significantly. Basically what I did was replace my Instagram app icon with an ebook reader on my phone. The muscle memory made me open that, and when a book opens up when you open your phone by habit, it gives you a trigger to read.

One thing that's really helped me get back into reading is actually listening to the audiobook while reading the book at the same time. It helps me stay focused listening to the audiobook so my mind doesn't drift as easily and reinforces all the words being narrated. It's kinda like having subtitles on a movie! It's a bit weird at first cause I have read faster than the audiobook reads so I have to slow down my reading page and not let my eyes jump too far ahead, but I've had a lot of success with this technique. It's especially useful for Fantasy where there are all sorts of strange names and place names that are helpful to see spelled out and hear pronounced. It's not the most cost effective cause you have to buy multiple formats but I've been using things like Libby or Spotify audiobooks to try to at least get one of the formats for cheap

This is what I did when I first started getting into adult fantasy and sci-fi. I don't know if this is totally accurate, but I feel like I was getting a double reinforcement of the information in a book and it made it easier for me to learn about new settings/characters. The big barrier for me and any new fantasy series is building up an innate understanding of how the world works. If I can understand how a world works, everything else falls into place for me.

Yeah, when I was younger I had a book for different parts of the house - a loo book, a bed book, a kitchen one and a lounge one, but since having to live in emergency accommodation I have one audio and one physical book. I don't have access to my e-reader, but that is great for moments I might otherwise have to twiddle my thumbs or play a phone game. 🎉

I remember being a kid and just reading because I loved it. I can’t tell you how many summers I spent laying on the grass in the yard with a book. I still love to read, but I treat it as an escapism from life rather than a chore. I dislike the “consume product get excited for next product” mentality that a lot book-related social media pushes, with “TBRs” and “how many books did you read this month?” It’s overwhelming and takes the fun out of reading. It’s one of the reasons I like channels like this, where I finish a really great fantasy novel and I can usually find a video here or on a select few other channels where that book has been discussed. I stay away from certain channels that push reading for the sake of just getting through books to move onto the next, consume audiobooks to get through your “TBR” (remember when you would finish a book and then think, “hmmm, what should I read next?” And spend a few days browsing the library until something caught your eye?) I think book consumption has gotten too rampant - let’s go back to reading for the enjoyment of it, and nothing else.

Great video and very helpful tips, I've been applying some of those lately. The one that has worked best for me is using a pen to guide my eyes. Not only does it help to not read the same word or sentence multiple times, but it also helps me read each line much faster and makes me have less distractions and keep my focus for longer. Aside from that, switching between different formats and different books (and different book sizes) also helps me stay motivated and focused. Seriously, I can't stress enough how helpful it is to use a pen to guide your eyes for people who are easily distracted or get lost in their thoughts like me.

Each to their own right we all have to find our way. I love this listing of all these different ways of reading. Thankfully I’ve seen a few comments say they do something similar to me. I read episodically. Little history first I really didn’t read as a child or a young man. I didn’t even read the quests I was working on in WOW I mean freaking really?! Yes, it was bad. I do make a goal for my reading for the year. I know some people find this to be incredibly counter productive but it works for me. I’m shooting for 100 this year, I’m at 58 right now. Back to my episodic reading; I read 3-4 books at a time. Three audiobooks and a comic, and I flip back and forth a chapter at a time. I have 3ish hours of commute a day. I’m thinking about picking up a digital reader but to be completely honest I am a slow slow reader. Good luck readers. A horse and his boy, a wise man’s fear, hitchhikers guide and the thirst Locke and key is what I’m currently working on. Just to give a real example of what and how I read. My wife says I’m insane for reading like this but I find it very helpful to break it up. Like benga watching a show I’ve come to realize I just do not recall very well so I need to make it more episodic and lets my brain absorb better instead of racing on.

I've been trying for years to get back into reading. It was really hard. I just felt like I never had the time but I realized that I did have the time, I was just using it to watch videos instead of reading. So I decided to bring a book to work and read it when it was slow. I decided to choose a book that I was familiar with so that when I took long breaks, I could pick it up and continue easily. It took a long time but it made me happy to finish the book. So I picked up another book that I've wanted to read for a long time and did the same thing. It took me 3 years to read it because work got busier but I finally finished this year and I was so excited and happy that I decided to listen to an audio book for another book that I was very familiar with. And I also go back and forth reading manga and comics. My brother removed closer and suggested a book from a genre that I've never read but that I love as a movie genre. It's shorter, with short chapters, as opposed to the thick fantasies I was wanting to read. And because I borrowed it, I'm motivated to read it so I can return it. I'm trying really hard and I'm determined so I forcing myself to read more that way. I leave my phone in the other room and specifically pick times to read when I don't have to rush or worry about time as much. I give myself a time frame to read every couple of days. So far it's working, slowly but surely. And as long as I'm making progress and enjoying that progress, reading is coming back to me slowly. Also, your hair is so distracting, in a good way lol. I stare at it almost every video, don't know why

My daily job is to read. I am a proof reader/editor. So it became natural to not read after work and instead watch tv or play video games. Those two I still do and combine them with reading on my way to work/way back home and then I always stop watching/playing at a certain time so I have one hour to read before I fall asleep. Was reading "The lies of Locke Lamora" two weeks ago, noticed on Kindle that it said "92% done" so I said "what's 8% extra?" and two hours later I was like "damnit, done with the book but I gotta wake up for work in 3 hours". My background music of choice to really focus on reading for the past 20 years, death metal. Makes it much easier.

It's OK Jay, so long as you aren't listening to an audio book while you read a physical book with one eye, an E-book with the other and a Braille with one hand, and writing with the other, it's not really multitasking, not in the same way. However if you're having any difficulty remembering characters, fictional words or plots, then maybe you do have too many on the go at once, but everyone is different that way, sometimes variety keeps things fresher. I think the different format especially helps keep a separation in the brain. The longer we can stay in each thing at a time the better too. That said, I mostly do focus on one story at a time as a preference, and if I need a break I go for a short story or novella or an audiobook I've read before. Of course video games, movies and serialized TV are exceptions to that. The brain is full of compartmentalization. Some stories demand more focus and it's worth shifting things around.

i guess i'm part of the problem when it comes to audiobooks, even though you are receiving the information, you're still not reading the book, you're listening to it. it's not just a somantic difference in my opinion. i believe there is enough of a difference in the experience and the actual process that occurs and chain of events that the two activities should not be glommed together. if listening to an audiobook is reading, wouldn't watching TV or a movie be like enhanced reading? we don't say i read a movie last week or i read a TV show last week; don't say you read a book if you listened to it, you're only saying that because it sounds more impressive and intellectual.
