I don't take the juice away. The pancakes then are crispy outside and juicy inside and it is even enough with one egg. You can just place the dough on a pan with a spoon and flatten them. You can also mix potatoes with zucchini. If you think there is too much juice you can add a bit of pea flour (zirņu milti). Good alternative for wheat flour. Also in sauces (mērces).

You can also totally replace potatoes with zucchini. The taste is practically the same but much lighter on carbs.

So, thanks to you, I learn that in my area (central France) we eat "draniki" because we grate the potatoes more finely (my first link with Belarus !). Except that, the recipe is the same. And we had very different names for potato (in France) : tartouffe, treuffe, truf(a), pompira, grompire, tartifla, patanos, and so on. (We actually say in standard french : "pomme de terre" and colloquially "patate".) Thanks for your interesting videos and... labu apetīti !

my Dad used to use parsley (which as a kid I hated, but now I think it adds a lot). My wife (not Latvian) also convinced me to put onion in (I'm not as big a fan, but it's ok) - and we also don't squeeze the juice out, we just add more flour if it's runny at any time (especially toward the end if you haven't been digging deep enough). But haven't had anyone not like them yet (and we've mixed in sweet potato and beetroot in the past too)

@@perdaljots I was mostly joking. My (Latvian)Mom put Dill in the Potato pancakes if she was serving for dinner, if it was a breakfast there was no dill. When ever I went to a Latvian hosted event almost all the sandwiches had dill sprinkled on them... so I associate dill was Latvian cooking but you know it also might be old-school and availability. I have kept the dill tradition (which might be family) for when ever I make fish; even my fish jerky will have dill-ha.

Ok, so I think you are borrowing too many words now. I used to think most of the cognates came down from Proto-Indo-European. Now, though, I'm not so sure. Kartupeļu sounds like it was borrowed from German kartoffel, and pankūkas sounds like it was borrowed from English pancakes. I have to say I feel like I can pick up a lot more Latvian a lot easier than Lithuanian though. Is the red and gray flag at the beginning supposed to be Poland? You always let your genius show in subtle ways that are not always wasted on everyone. I found out I've been making Belorussian pancakes all these years. I use the same ingredients except, I add onion and salt, and put sugar on top. I throw it all together in a blender. I personally think they're better with onion. Most here do seem to make them your way from what I can tell. I seriously can barely understand a word John is saying. Is he speaking English?
@irregularLatvian

John Speaks scooooootish. But yes I also need about an hour every time to adapt, he also speaks so fast! And you’re right about the kartupeļu pankūkas. We’ve borrowed many words from the Germans. But then they borrow them from the English. I learned this week that wasp is “wespe” in German. Because I got stung by one (yay summer)! Anyway, that word at least we didn’t borrow. It’s “lapsene” in Latvian. But then an old way of saying “tuxedo” in Latvian was “ancuks “ which is the Germans “Anzug”. But then we degermanised the language and made up “uzvalks” which is what we use instead. It’s a melting pot, the world. :)
