I'm a complete noob when it comes to amp models, I've "just" been playing guitar for 11 years.. Even though I've played electric through 100s of amps for forever I have no clue what you guys are talking about, but am I getting this right; you think that the deluxe reverb is a bad amp? If yes, how so?
@ArielsSmartyPants

What? Make sense for one and because we want to hear the deluxe doesn't sound at all like we think they're bad. Considering that's what I have at home I think not lol. Have a better one.

***** English is a second language for me, sorry. I interpreted Graeme's comment as nothing could make the deluxe sound good and I wanted to know if I got that right. And I was also saying that even though I have 11 years of experience under my belt, I don't know anything about different amp models, which is why I was asking about it. Hope that made more sense.

I absolutely love that Tele, Dan. You inspired me to pick up my first Tele ever a couple years ago. And, I've gotta say, Mick playing that 335 through the Beano into that Marshall sounds monstrous - a match made in tonal Heaven. Reminiscent of Clapton's work with Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. That LP didn't sound none too shabby either, BTW.

My amp is a BlackStar and I run a Fender Strat with a Seymour Duncan in the bridge. On a clean channel in front of the amp the EP Booster gives a rather distorted muddy sound similar to that of the Marshall in this video. With little rise in terms of volume. When I run the EP Booster through the effects loop I get clear transparency and the volume level spikes to insane levels. Just thought I would put this out here for those BlackStar owners wondering what to expect when combining the two.

A critical flaw i see here is that the vast majority of pedals need to set differently based on the amp and guitar being used (as amps also need to be set differently based on the guitar and pedals used) to achieve the best sound. If they pre-gamed it and figured out the most neutral settings that seemed to be a compromise across all guitars, amps, and pedals, that still doesn't show the true potential of the various combinations.

For completeness, the bottom end produced by the JTM is also a function of the cab and speakers. Everything in the signal chain, from fingers to ears, passing by room, mikes, preamps, mix, mastering, your computer, your sound card, the state of your hearing and even the mood you are in contributes to what you hear. And by the way, I've not mentioned all the other variables in the equation. My point? It's as much a science as it is an art and time spent paying attention to what you're doing is the best way to gain knowledge and develop your own tone. Which, by the way, is not a destination...

Just an update. The EP Booster has dip switches that control the amount of bass that get boosted so if you're not looking for a fat boost you can turn it into a flat EQ clean boost. That said the bass boost is exaggerated in this video. Must be clipping the mic or the older EP had much more bass. Mine just gives a nice fat boost which is great for solos in the upper frets.

Great great demo!! It would have been nice though if you guys would have included the "naga vipper" by Catalinbread. It's a boost pedal that allows you to adjust the frequencies that you wish to boost. So you basically have a full frequency booster or a treble booster in one pedal. It gives a lot of flexibility and is pretty useful if you have many guitars and different amps in your rig. Cheers!

Tom Alford , because there is absolutely no evidence that Clapton ever used a treble booster on the Bluesbreakers album and Clapton never claimed he did. He actually said he plugged straight into the amp. The myth that he used a treble booster has absolutely nothing to back it up. Somebody just claimed they heard one somewhere on the album and the myth spread. I’m sure Dan and Mick know it’s just a myth and the pedal is named that just out of fun. Find any evidence that Clapton used a treble booster on the Beano album and you’ll be the first man ever to find any.

I’d love to see you guys go into more depth about buffering and impedance and their impact on tone and how the pedals/circuits work. I’ve only recently become aware of the effects of impedance matching and loading. When I bought an SM7 for my home studio, I also picked up a Cloudlifter Z-i, which also has a Hi-Z input and variable impedance. Shocking what it does to the sound of a guitar or bass (or dynamic mic) when going direct-it just seems to “open” it up, expanding it somehow without being an EQ. Alternatively, at lower settings, it can “dull” or “ghost” the sound (also not EQ). I know there are schools of thought on whether to put a tuner/mute (such as a Boss TU-series) at the front of the signal chain or at the end, due to its buffering properties. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

There is alot more to this story. You have to adjust the amp/guitar to each pedal. You have 3 parameters to adjust, guitar, pedal and amp. And then find out what sound are you aiming to get/ sound ideal ? Do you play in a 3 piece og 9 piece band ? Finding the right combo is very tricky.

Nice review and demo. The only thing I would like to add is you really didn't cover the full capabilities of the EP Booster. There are 2 internal dip switches which provide you 4 different sounds. The switches control bass boost and treble boost. You can have them on individually, on together, or off together. Where you were getting too much bass on the JTM45, you could have verified the bass was off and boosted the treble if needed. As you mention, each guitar and amp set up is different and you should try all 4 setting to find the one that works the best for that set up. I too had too much bass until I made the proper adjustments. Now it's perfect. I leave it on all the time at 9 o'clock and it just fills out the sound. Thanks again and keep the demos coming. I appreciate it knowledge, enthusiasm, and playing.

The King of Tone also has an internal treble trimmer pot in case you can't get enough range on the external pots. You can also change each side of the pedal to be boost, OD, or distortion independently, so you can set it to be boost / boost like I do. It comes from AnalogMan as OD into boost. It's a very good pedal!
@JohnShalamskas

Running the Kot version 4 pedal on 18V instead of 9V increases headroom and max output level. It sounds more open and less compressed. I also swapped out the yellow channel op-amp with an OPA2134 for its superb clean tone and smoother, less sputtery distortion tone when I crank up the drive level. The op-amps are socketed, so it's a piece of cake to swap them out.
